Now that I'm back playing guitar, I'm going through the parts of songs that I have avoided learning because I couldn't untangle the notes correctly and the phone apps available at the time were clunky. I found an app called Transcribe+ for iPhone and it is so easy to use. The two main features I like are the loop and slowdown. Creating a loop is super simple, just press the loop button at the beginning of the section you want to loop and then adjust the length. Slowing the song down is easy too, just slide the speed to the left. It's so cool slowing a section down note for note because my brain tends to add more notes than exist at normal speeds. There are other things the app can do, like separate a song into drums, vocal, instrumentals, bass. You can also adjust the pitch. The app is $15.00 and worth the price because of its great, simple interface. Transcribe+ app link

The world has come a long way since the days when I played 45 RPM records at 33-1/3 so I could figure out what the guitar player was doing. I destroyed a lot of records that way. I later had a cassette Portastudio that I could record a record to and then play it at half speed that worked better. Still, it was the stone-ages compared to now. And of course now there is YouTube where almost anything has already been figured out for you. Maybe things are a little TOO easy.
