I’ve been asked to play bass in an outdoor event this summer. I’m also occasionally covering bass in a small duet project. I was getting tired of my Guild Pilot and found a great deal on this Lakland 5 string. I thought the 5 would be real tough to adapt to. It’s offering a challenge, but it’s not insurmountable and it’s proving enlightening. Here’s to having fun and acquiring new skills. Anyone out there have any good pointers, exercises etc.? Now I’ve got to find my preference for bass strings. That’s far more costly than trying different guitar strings. You bass players; Please share your preferences.

The advice I hear from bass players to guitar players is, play fewer notes.

The advice I hear from bass players to guitar players is, play fewer notes. Believe me there aren’t a lot of notes coming out of my amp. Lack of ability more than anything. Come to think of it somebody told me to play fewer notes on guitar about 45 years ago. Apparently, I wasn’t very good at it back then.

Not a bassist, but I've had good luck with DR bass strings. I'd say in general, different bass strings impact the tone of instrument a lot more than different guitar strings do.

The minute someone hands me a bass I become John Entwistle - and they never hand it to me again! Very cool bass though! Congrats!

Lakland's are really nice. I just sold 2 from my late friend's collection; one was a USA model and one a Skyline. I'm not a bassist, but my friend always used Rotosound.

Well, since I've had to re-employ myself as a recording bass player, my drummer's advice to me has been to support the kick drum, leave space for the snare, put some movement in there for feel, and don't play like a midi bass. I'm now to the point where I can implement this when recording after some trial and error, but I doubt I can do it live. Maybe my final advice to myself is think less and feel more. If you feel overwhelmed at all with five strings, watch this Bruce Hornsby Changes Made video, and five strings will look simple. I'll be honest. When I watched this video before, I would have sworn the bass player had an eight string bass. Now I see it's only six. Have fun. Feel the Groove!

I mostly use DR and Elixirs. Bass is an occasional mistress for me and I just started playing 5 stringers. Not a huge adjustment.
