Hi all,
I've been storing some amps for a friend while he is moving and was told to "go ahead and play them" so I have!
In return for the usage I've been doing the Dr Z recomended maintenance on each of the amps (8 total), cleaning the tube sockets and cleaning and tightening all the chassis connections.
The Z28 head that is visiting has found its way into a 1x10 Combo cab I have at the house with a 10" Greenback. I can't say enough good things about the 10" greenback but that has been discussed in other threads (its not the same as its 12" big brother).
I've been using the 1x10 Z28 up at church and it sits next to my 1x10 Carmen Ghia that Doc built for me a few ago so that when my son and I play electric guitar together we have a pair a really nice amps to use that have different voices.
I've been using the Z28 and have really found a low sweet spot with this amp. I can't have very much stage volume but I can have some . . . . keeping the volume low and the cab kicked backed a little bit thanks to a Hymnal (no disrespect indended) I've found this amp to be very practical, especially paired my tele and some over wound pickups.
This past weekend we played a Lincoln Brewster song called "Today is the Day" and a modern version of "Nothing but the Blood" Style wise, very different songs. On "Today is the Day" I used my Zdrive on the green side drive about 9 o'clock and volume about 10. I typically like my EQ set with the mids knob dimmed bass around noon and treble around 1 o'clock. I've been digging a Catalinbread pedal called Karma Suture. Its a smooth fuzz/distortion pedal that allows you to control input and output volumes seperately. I crank the input volume and the back it off on the output side. Plenty of gain and I use my guitar volume to adjust for doing the guitar solo. I use my Dispatch Master for a little reverb and a light delay with just a couple of soft repeats. Sounded good.
For "Nothing but the Blood" I used the same Zdrive setting and amp settings without the Karma Suture and added my Afterneath reverb and Advalance Run by Earthquaker. I get a nice full reverby delay with lots of sparkle and chime without getting to overboard. I did a lot of arpegio during this song and without going into the stratosphere with wetness. I'm not a big fan of super wet, super over the top stuff that has been poplular the last few years (I do see that trend changing with some of the newer songs).
For the Z28, I can't say enough good things about this amp and how well behaved it can be. As with most Z amps I am continually amazed a how great the clean sustain is. You can strike and clean note and it will ring out long and strong with a sweet decay. Pick attack and guitar volume channges are very responsive and the amp doen't sound dead, even with the volume control at around about 8 o'clock.
