I'm normally not a burst fan but I like that one. Congratulations. I generally like bursts but not flame tops haha. But this one is a AA top with just the right amount of flame to not make me feel like I’m playing a piece of furniture.

Yer freakin' me out, man, with that power drill so close to that gorgeous new guitar! LOL...
Seriously, though--congrats... Nice instrument! I've just recently had to have the factory (Corian) nut replaced (with Tusq) on my 2013 Les Paul on account of the fact that it would NOT stay in tune. It's great now, though--and I can finally enjoy it the way it was intended. I certainly hope your newer one fares better than that. (You've already paid enough for it, and you shouldn't have to pay more just for it to stay in tune, fer cryin' out loud.)

Stuart, What pickups are they putting in the USA Les Paul's these days? Burstbucker 61r and 61t I believe. They’re pretty decent. Might change them out at some point, but wanna give them time to grow on me first.

Burstbucker 61r and 61t I believe. They’re pretty decent. Might change them out at some point, but wanna give them time to grow on me first. FWIW, I had the stock Burstbuker 1 and 2 in my 2004 standard (main guitar) for 15 years except for about 2 years where I had a Duncan Antiquity in the bridge for a little while (I put the burstbuker back in). Anyway, I got the bug to try some of those super expensive PAF style pickups. Did that and like them, but I lost something I really liked about the stock ones too. That led to trying to get back that sound and for a LP custom and a sire LP trying to replace that original sound, but those don't get that sound I was looking for either. My point being if you like the guitar as is, maybe just keep it as is and save yourself a lot of hassle and money. I'm also a fan of the newer Gibsons. Might also add that I have a pretty expensive PRS 594 that's a good guitar, and I like it, but I almost never play it because the standard Gibson guitars just seem to have some mojo over it in my opinion. "Mojo" really meaning I think they just sound better.

Gibson makes great pickups. I always liked the Burstbucker 1/2 set. My other favorite Gibson's are the 57/57+ classic combo. And when it comes to P90's the plain ol gibson p90 is awesome. I prefer it to anything I've tried from the fancy pickup winders. In the past I'd change pickups almost immediately, but over the years I've learned to be more patient and play around with amp settings and pickup height adjustments more. It makes more of a difference in most cases. The new Gibsons I've had are great! I'm sure yours is no exception. My '19 Gibson USA junior and J45 are fantastic! Really well made and play great. Enjoy that sucker.

My point being if you like the guitar as is, maybe just keep it as is and save yourself a lot of hassle and money. I've been down that hole before! I was trapped in there for years lol! I've learned, at least for me, that finding a pickup that does one specific thing perfectly is easy. Finding one that does everything very well is more difficult. Most of the Gibson pickups I've had do everything very, very well. But I've had some that no matter how much I tried, adjusted height, and adjusted pole pieces, they just weren't in the cards for me. It happens I guess. In my case those were the A3 custombuckers that came in my 57' TH reissue LP Custom. They were really low output and seemed tuned for a very specific tone. Although I bought it used at a local pawn / consignment shop, the new price would make it the most expensive Gibson I've ever had, and I didn't like the pickups lol. Just not my bag. But others love them I'm sure! Different strokes and all that jaz.

My favorite Gibson pickups are the 57/57+ as well. The only boutique pickups I’ve had that I’ve liked more are the Lollar Imperials (regular in the neck and high wind in the bridge). But specifically that set. I had a low wind set that I liked a whole lot less. I like these, they just lack a little bit of mmmph I feel like the 57 classics and imperials have. But they have a vintage, wordy, and smoky tone the 57s never had but the imperials have a tinge of that while not being as warm/muddy in the neck. If I switch, it will be to get that set again..

Funny... my LP Traditional Pro II (similar to a Classic or the old Standard, but with a satin back and zebra uncovered pickups) came with the 57/57+ combo and I switched to the Lollar Imperials (std. set). I honestly didn't even give the 57/57+ a chance in this guitar, since I didn't love the covered ones in my previous LP, and but I also wanted nickel covers. The Lollars were a no-brainer considering their reputation, and I do like them. Definitely less muddy in the neck, and more noticeably, I can roll the volume down on either pickup and get cleaner/clearer tone but it still sounds good. THAT was when I finally understood the technique of using your guitar's volume knob to control tone & gain.

I had a 2010 (I think) R8 with the Burstbucker 1 & 2 set from the factory. I didn’t really like them for the classic/southern rock and blues I was playing at the time. I, in retrospect, might be more able to like them now. I put a set of Duncan Antiquities in and was very happy with the tone and the way the behaved/reacted to tone and volume manipulation. I currently own a 2014 3 pu ‘57 BB reissue. It has, as far as I can tell, ‘57 Classics in all three positions (from factory). They work fine for me and though I think of changing them, I probably won’t. The most enjoyable set I had were the Burstbucker Pro’s in a ‘50’s Faded Standard (2006?). A nice guitar, but I found the neck too small, especially at the nut. It was weight relieved guitar and that may have had some effect on the tone of the guitar, but not the way they reacted to tone and volume control manipulations. The guitar looks good! Enjoy! ME

While there is always the "grass is greener" feeling with this stuff, I can't envision ever changing them. They cover a lot of ground. They sound real great with the tone rolled off for jazzy stuff and can rock out pretty hard!

The neck is a little too loud and dark. I’m still gonna give it some time though in order to try and figure out if I can make it work for me before doing a swap.

I'm sure you played around with the pickup height. Try the polepieces too. They can dramatically change the tone. I usually write down how far I turn them so I can bring it back to factory if need be. You can get a brighter more single coil-ish sound if you raise the row of individual pole pieces and lower the pickup in the mounting ring. If you feel now it's too dark try turning each polepiece 1½ turns CCW (to raise them each the same amount). Then lower the actual pickup to the volume that matches your bridge. That might be too much adjustment on the polepieces for you, but it will give you an idea of how this method sounds. Once you get a sound you like, then match the string volumes with the polepieces. As long as you write down how far you turn them it's an easy go back if you don't like the results.
