I have an opportunity to buy (used) either a pre-2016 Maz 8 or a Mesa Rectoverb 25. I currently have a Dr Z Monza with the Master Volume.
I play at home 95% of the time, so I'm looking for something that would sound good at low volumes, and I think both of these would do the trick.
Any thoughts?

I cannot comment on the Rectoverb, but the options that come with the Maz 8 are excellent - 2nd only to the handbuilt workmanship. As far as using this amp at home you can't beat it.

Are you considering heads or combos?

Love my maz 8. Had a Mesa lone star special and while it was a great amp, I find the z to be much more responsive to my approach to playing whether it be pick attack or fiddling with the guitar knobs.

My son had a Mesa 1x12 combo for a while (Maverick ot Lonestar?) But his biggest complaint was not getting the tone he got at rehearsal at an actual gig - it always changed so he could not depend on it. All I ever get with any Z I've gigged with are compliments re tone.

Maz and get it updated. I have a MKII and it’s killer, so many tonal options. If I had to down size and keep one Z amp, it could be it. But I highly highly recommend the MKII updates. Really polished the amp up and dead silent.

What nmz says. I've got the Maz 8 with the update and I can get sounds from sweet clean to really gutsy rock. It's got plenty of gain but it's so controllable. The Master Volume is insanely good in the upgraded 8...it's transparent. Plus you can switch over to triode operation and it's completely a different amp. I'd take the Maz over the Mesa any day. It's a winner.

Hey- Thanks for all the input! Decided to go with the Maz 8-sure glad I did! Nice compliment to my Monza. Wise choice. Obviously, Mesa makes good amps. But it is often a lot of work to dial in and for some magical reason you can dial in the perfect tone and it’s gone the next you plug in. Dr Z, and particularly the Maz series not only stays consistent at particular settings, but it has various tones that actually sound good across the deep of the controls. I’m glad my Mesa phase ended.

It's a winner. I played thru Dave's amp and he isn't kidding. It sounds great. I owned a Maz 8 when it was first released and stupidly sold it. I was very versatile and has so many features. Maz 8 all the way

I asked a question earlier and then forgot all about it, sorry. I think the Rectoverb is probably Mesa’s best amp. I had one of the originals years ago in 1x12 wide body. Can’t speak for the newer, smaller ones but its voicing and simplicity made it a favorite back then (past tense is telling here...) That said, I still much prefer the Maz 8. Much better sounding, very impressive build, and will last a lifetime. I have the head version and like the ability to use different speakers, but usually stick with a Celestion Blue in a Z 1x12 open back. Heavenly tone. You chose wisely
