I've just picked up a used SRZ-65 which I've arranged to send in to the Dr. Z wizards for a checkout. I've got some reason to suspect at least some of the tubes are shot so while it breaks up really early I'm not sure yet that's what it is supposed to do.
What I'm hoping for is that for anything else JCM-ish it might do, the SRZ-65 can do a good approximation of the Normal channel of the 50w JCM 800 2-channel MV models (2205 / 4210 combo).
I've got a 4210 combo and don't even use the Drive channel with that clipping diode. But I do really like the Normal channel and use it with pedals with great success.
Anyone have an idea if this will work out?

It will suit you well, specially if your going to goose it with a few pedals. I to really like using the first channel on the JCM800 two channel and never touch the gain side. To many good tones from that "Clean" channel. The SRZ will not get as gainy or the same type of gain at higher settings. As a pedal platform based on an amp that has authority you will did it.
F'ing loud, i'm not going to lie to ya. The Air Brake is my friend and it works super well with it.

Does exactly what I hoped it would. And oh yes is it *ever* effin' loud.

LOL... yeah, for sure. Doc could simply name that amp the "FN Loud" because it sure is. It's in his "big boy amps" catalog, for sure--along with the Antidote, Original Rx, and the EZG.

Get an Airbrake, I use one and love it. If you've used a reactive load box (OX, Fryette PS, Suhr RL) how would you compare to Airbrake to a RL? I figure the Airbrake is made-to-order for Z amps, but I still do have a few remaining non-Z amps. ;-)

Do you want to turn the amp or any of your amps devastatingly loud and bring it down to a whisper? Those two things the Brake does not do as well as a Reactive Load. The Brake works fantastic for you being able to get the amp loud enough to breath and then kick in down a few notches and keep the relationship of the Amp to Speaker. The RL are next level, if you want to be able to bring and amp way down for recording, getting a direct signal with no cabinet for a true isolated guitar that sounds amazing in the track.

I have and use a Suhr RL/IR -> audio interface for recording. I had a Power Station 2 before that but really didn't use it. Since I don't use effects loops even when the amp has them, for live use I normally want a great clean sound and then use pedals in front. Granted that's not always ideal, particularly when an amp sounds unbelievable cranked up. But it's practical. So for recording, I can continue to use the Suhr for the SRZ and crank it - for live, I plan to use the SRZ as a fantastic "JCM 800 clean" platform. A Suhr Eclipse sounds fantastic into the SRZ.
