Every so often I get the itch for a 2x12, but after I buy one I never use it. Mostly I think a lot of them are too deep. I'm not a fan of when the cabinet adds a ton of bass to the mix, I like punch and clarity, as well as mixing speakers. I have an open back Dr Z 2x12 that will stay with the speakers it has in it and I would like to have something I can mess with.
I did like and sadly sold an original Feiten 2x12, because I ordered a new Fuchs cab when I was playing Fuchs amps. The two Fuchs 2x12's never sounded as good as the original, its not that they weren't build well, they just didn't sound the same.
I didn't like the Fuchs Hermida design cabs, I owned a couple of those as well. I'm not much on front ported cabs.
The ZBest is just a huge beast of a cabinet, I just don't see myself carrying that one around. I had one for a short time and that cabinet is an experience all in it own. It is like hooking your guitar up to a hifi system.
So i'm thinking compact, diagonal speaker position similar to the Feiten cabinet, is anybody using anything like that, that maybe they would recommend?

Schroeder Sidecar 212This would be even more overkill than a Z-Best, but this is my I win the lotto and build a guitar mansion dream cabinet.

According to Mather he builds these, so maybe you could save some money and go to him. I think I've seen you say you had him build your shorty speaker cabs, so you probably already know to check out his variety of cabinets.

If you Z Best was an older version it would be heavy. I think it was a year or two ago they changed to wood used and they are much lighter now at 45lbs.
Do you want closed back, convertible, open? What amps will you generally be using with it?

It will preferable either semi open or convertible. I prefer open, but having played live I know that doesn't always work. The drummer has had to save by butt a few times with his drum shell bags.
I think a diagonal 2x12 out of pine with 2 Neo speakers would be a one hander and travel easy.
I may talk to Mathers down the road, but i'm looking to see if someone has a suggestion I haven't thought of.

It can be run in mono or each speaker by themselves.

I’ll throw out TRM Cabs - I’ve bought a few from him. 2x12, slant 2x12, 1x12 thiele. Excellent work and you can buy unfinished to save some $ and do whatever finish you want. www.trmguitarcabs.com/index.html

I'm getting closer. I think i'm going to go with some sort of diagonal 2x12, with a split back of some sort.

Hey bubs--maybe check out the Avatar "compact 2x12" cabinet? I have one and it's pretty great. (Granted, I don't have a ton of 2x12's to do side-by-side comparisons, but it does exactly what I need it to.)
It's just about one of the smallest & most portable 2x12's out there, and has a tuned open-back port that sort of sounds halfway between a closed & open back cabinet. Oh, and did I mention that it's literally a copy of the tried-and-true old THD design, which the gear community used to fawn over all the time, before all these other players got in the game? Yeah, it's pretty good.

Yeah, it's pretty good. This Avatar cab is a great sounding cab. The one thing that I am undecided on the most is depth of a cabinet. I play in pretty tight spaces and I don't really need 12" of depth that seems to be so popular. I would rather have clear projection and tight lows.

Not really compact, nor diagonal, but the old Forte design is made by avatar now. I had one of the vertical 212 Forte cabs. The top is open on the sides and the bottom is closed back (They also make a horizontal version). The side vents are directional and unique. I used it with a Carol Ann OD3r back in the day. It was a great cab. Pretty light with all the milling out. Check out the inside pics. No experience with the Avatar version, but it sure looks exactly like the Forte cab I had. avatarspeakers.com/shop/guitar/3d-212-vertical-forte-replica/

No experience with the Avatar version, but it sure looks exactly like the Forte cab I had. I've had both an original Forte and a more recent Avatar one--honestly, I don't think I could tell you any differences, even having looked inside them to swap speakers. Just FWIW.

The Forte is cool, but not really what i'm looking for. The backline is a great option, but expensive and hard to find used. I would like to have one, it makes since to me and I would love to try one.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, and I have no experience with them, but Suhr has a diagonal 2-12 in their Pete Thorn signature series.

No love for the Port City 2x12? Horizontal or vertical, regular or supersize.

Now I'm looking for a 212. Dam u guys. This cab wouldn’t apply to the OP as it weighs in somewhere between 70-80 lbs! However, for you as a home player and knowing your taste in amps, it would work. This is the 212CH that matches their Helios amp. It’s the one I bought with my Eclipse. The front baffle is slightly angled. It’s the 212 that thinks it’s a 412. Of course mine is in blonde/ivory, but the black look great and it just looks right sitting under a modest sized amp head.

^ Looks similar in size / shape to a Marshall 1936 cab. I had one of those before and liked it quite a bit.

I didn't look at the dimension specs or anything. The tilted baffle is what reminds me of the 1936. I like slanted baffle straight cabs and slant 412 cabs. The Mojo Slammins looks interesting to me. I like the fact it's angled and a head still fits on top

I haven't found a 2x12 cab that works for me yet. I have an Avatar Signature 2x12 closed back cab that came with my Avatar 45 head. It's huge! 31" wide x 21" tall x 15" deep and adds a tremendous amount of bass. It's like a drum. It's also heavy and a bear to move.
I bought a Mojotone British Lite 2x12" cab to use with the amp. It's much smaller- 28" wide x 20" tall and 10-1/4" deep and has an open back and sounds a little flat. I think it needs more depth.
I think a closed back 2x12" cab that's roughly 28" wide x 20" tall x 12" deep would be just right for me.
Maybe.

^^ That's interesting. I've never seen a cab with hinges on the back plate before. Looks like something Steve Carr has taken inspiration from. Some of his current stuff looks like that.

nicholas , what a stud going right to a 4x12. LOL I'm still looking. I was talking to my friend about cabs as we were hanging out last week. Even though I really like two speakers together, setting two small 1x12's side by side too me sounds better. I think giving the speakers their own space makes a difference. So i'm working through trying to figure out what I want to do. Heck I even though about having two 1x10 similar to Dr Z's cabs built with 12's in them, but then i'm carrying two cabs. The other options is doing a diagonal cabinet made up with 1/10 and 1/12. I'm a fan of mixing 10/12 speakers, if done correctly they complete each other to make a dynamic sound.

I just play at home and love how 412's sound. I don't have to worry about moving them around. I do have one at my buddies house so I can just bring a head when I go over there. Now I have one w/ G12T-75's, one w/ herritage greenbacks, and now one w/ V30's .I passed on the idea of a 212 because I was worried I'd just wish I went with the 412. That's for my hard rock stuff. For everything else I like a 112 combo amp or open back 112. Maybe you just like the sound of two spread out speakers? If portability is key, You could try using your regular 112 and then setting a smaller cab off to the side, like a 1-8" or something real light and portable?
