Against the odds I picked up a Wreck Jr....!
Maz 18 v1 owner for about 5 years. Big Maz fan. No complaints and my first Z.
Always wanted another(2nd)for some variety. So in a chain reaction of events the Maz is gone and the Wreck Jr is in.
The interesting part was I had my heart firmly set on a 6v6 so I had researched little about the wreck jr. A gamble of sorts based solely on reputation and the info exchanged here on the forum. I have always been partial to the EL84 side so here we are. What a nice surprise! Modern but familiar, like sitting down to conversation with an old friend. I like edge of break up,..I was concerned that I would only be able to get clean with the volume knob. This is not the case. Big 3 dimensional clean character when you push the master. More of a growl than overdriven. I ride the volume low and use pedals to push into overdrive. On overdrive, the natural overdrive of the amp sounds fantastic. Additionally, with a compressor engaged you can get some thick sustain. The individual notes still shine through with clarity. The type of overdrive pedal companies are trying to replicate. On pedals.. I have very few. Dispatch Master reverb sounds great, the overdrives are a Wampler hot wired, and an Eqd plumes. Mostly just for convenience and variety. Both overdrives take well but the plumes tube screamer setting seems the most natural, driving a sweet overdrive if your already on the edge. I would have chosen the head given a first choice but now owning the combo I’m not so sure. The combo is just a really nice design. Gorgeous cabinet and simple. I was able to remove the chassis to change the power tubes myself. I don’t tinker with speakers much so this is my first Greenback. Wow! Perfect! More versatile than expected, Its plain to see why the original wreck was so popular.
