So, this past weekend I happened upon two 1981 Marshall JCM800 Bass 1935B cabs. Everything is solid, but fair condition, as they are pretty well worn. Cabs have sequential serial numbers, and they both have matching quads of Rola Celestion G12-65s (T3101 - date codes: FP17). I could only find markings on one of the cones (444 - “bass” 55 Hz cone), and I have no reason to believe the others are different.
I had been on the lookout for a 2x12 for a recent Marshall head I purchased, but the prices have been a bit more than I wanted to spend. When I found these at a local pawn shop, I was super excited. I asked to pop the back open, saw the 65s, immediately put the back on, and got them both for less than I would have spent on a decent loaded 2x12. It wasn’t until after I got home to examine them a bit further that I saw they had the “bass” cone. I admit, I felt a little deflated because most I’ve read have put down the 444...
... And then, for the hell of it, I hooked up my Z-Wreck Jr. and it was glorious!!
I’ve had a love/hate thing with the Jr.. I’ve often find the combo sounded a bit dark and muted. I even tried it with some Celestion alnicos (Blue and Cream), and, compared to other amps, it was still not as bright and “alive” as I wished. I’ve been so at odds with it, that I’ve listed and pulled a FS ad many times. But hooking the amp up to this Marshall cab... Holy cow!! The volume really isn’t that bad (I think the speaker sensitivity of the G12-65s are fairly low), but the sound is so much better, IMO. And pedals that I had ditched because of how the darkness seemed to make them “not work”, are now sounding better than ever!
I can’t compare these “bass” cone Marshall cabs to the “lead” cone ones, but I must say, I love what I am hearing. (I wonder if people say that because they covet the 444 cones and they know they are awesome and don’t want others to find out).
Now I just need to get a head box for my Jr. So I can put it up on top. 😎😎

I ran my Jr head through my Z 212 with Golds (that Doc built for me To go with my Z80) and I loved it. The Jr sounded might fine at all volumes pushing the 2 Golds. Who’d have thought

Pic your comment:
1) Maybe you like the speakers? 2) Maybe you like closed back cabinets? 3) Maybe you like those speakers in a closed back cabinet? 4) I'm not helping you move those cabinets.

Didn't I read somewhere that Hendrix preferred Celestions with the 55Hz cone?
