I made a basic three chord rocker to play over...I am trying to find new ideas to break out of my habit of playing the same damn licks over and over and over...You'll see what I mean in this clip...I just find there's no depth in my playing...there's some nice stuff here and there but maybe I am being too hard on myself (who isn't? haha)...would anyone care to take this jam track and rock out some ideas? Help a fella out? soundcloud.com/mnicholson2003/friday-night-rocker-eh-rhythm-track

Mark, I think you are being too hard on yourself. your rhythm playing, tone and recording are all great. 2 minutes is a lot of 12-bar phrases to fill with licks and leads. for depth, play with more intention; take a different approach every 12-bars; take one idea and slowly flesh it out more every 12 bars; try play only in the minor pentatonic with the occasional maj 3rd as a passing tone; learn more bend licks; think metaphorically about looking to the bottom of a clear pond... the more waves in the water, the less depth you see.. apply that concept to your playing.... how to still the water?? just some ideas. you really have a great tone and feel. it's a never ending road, so do some exploring and enjoy the ride.

That’s a nice rhythm tone your getting there Mark. If I wouldn’t have seen it was a Tele, I wouldn’t have thunk it. I could NEVER play leads to 12 bar blues things, that’s why open jam sessions never interested me, because that’s all they usually are. personally, 12 bar blues things just bored me to death. (but that’s just me) I’m a terrible lead player anyway, but what little lead I could play best to was always over a melodic rhythm.

Dude! That sounds good! Although, maybe I get where you're coming from. The good players, athletes, etc always are looking for ways to take it up. So, don't be too hard on yourself, but that is somewhat inspirational that you want to improve and/or add to what you've got. I was going to say George Thorogood always said he only new two or three solos and did pretty well. Although, that's also the reason he said he added the sax player. If I get a chance, I'll download and add something although I'm in the midst of trying to record a vocal (and get out of a rut). If I do put something up, you'll probably say "Well. That convinces me I've already got a good thing going. What was GuitarZ thinking? He's the one that needs help."

OK, here's another opinion. You sound great. Tones are good, phrasing is nice, and what you're playing is certainly appropriate for that sort of tune. That's the thing, though - playing non-pentatonic "outside" lines on that sort of 1-4-5 blues rock thing is going to sound weird.
It almost sounds like you're saying "I always sound like this when I play", but then you are playing over the same sort of rock/blues type thing that lends itself to that sort of style. If you're looking to add something else to your playing, try playing over something where blues/rock lines are going to sound weird.
That's actually been my practice routine during COVID. Go to Youtube, and start searching for guitar backing tracks. They are everywhere, and come in every style. Choose a 2/5/1 in C Major, and get some jazzy lines in. Maybe something modal? Or an old Grateful Dead song, where you've got to follow the changes around?
Pick one a bit out of your comfort zone, and start there. Post the backing track here, and we can all play on it!

I think it sounds great, Mark, but I know what you mean about falling into a rut with your playing. It's like working out, back when that was a thing for me--I'd improve and plateau, improve and plateau, and then finally it was all plateau and no real improvement--peak strength, basically. In kind of the same way, I feel like I've been playing the same basic crap for a couple of years now--BUT, it works for what we do, and I'm pretty good at it, so there's that. As for your video, which is really well done, the only thing I'd say is that from my own (very limited) catalog of licks, I'd think about maybe throwing in some Chuck Berry-ish stuff and some Gibbons-esque stuff along with a couple of fake pedal steel bends, just to mix things up. In the meantime, you've got a couple of nice licks in there I'm going to try to steal, so thanks for that. Also, that thing Ian said about the water? No idea what he's talking about, but it sounded awesome.
