I've been studying on the benefits of an EF86 as the first preamp tube, how much they like pedals. Is it possible to put one in a Maz 18, or does the amp need to be designed for that tube?

Has to be designed for that tube. A 12AX7 and EF86 are not interchangeable. If you want to try an EF86 in the first position, look for a used Z28 or wait for the remake if it comes around. If you want more power, look for a used KT45, Route 66, or Delta 88.

The Doc used to make a lot of amps with the EF86 front end. The Z-28 and M12 are the best known examples, but there's one for almost any power tube flavor:
M12: EL84 Z-28: 6V6 KT-45: EL34 RT 66: KT66 Delta 88: KT88 Surgical Steel: KT88
These are all out of production, but you can still find them used if you look.

I'm more than happy with the power of my Maz. I was just looking at tweakable options. Thanks for letting me know the EF86 is a no-go for the Maz 18.

I haven’t played any Z’s with the ef86, but I had 65 Amp that did. I was solid, but didn’t love it.
