I'm thinking of trying some hum-sized P90s in a Les Paul style guitar I have lurking about. Wonder what folks may have tried, pros-cons, expense, whatever... This is a project that I don't want to spend the farm on. Overall, I'm about cleaner tones more than really dirty, if that makes any difference. Also, has anyone had experience with the GFS mean90s. Obviously an off shore budget PU, but at least w/ alnico magnets.

I only have experience with the HD Z-90s. I put them in an ASAT Deluxe semi hollow and used them for about 10-12 years. Not inexpensive but there were a lot fewer options out there in the early 00's than there are now. I liked them. Tons of reviews out there on them because they have been around so long.

+1000 on the Z90s.
I put them in an Epi LP about 15 years and love them. By point of reference, I’m not much of a “true humbucker” guy - my McCarty is my only humbucker guitar. I prefer the bite of single coils. The Z90 provides the P90 bite with a bit more oomph, but not as dark as a ‘bucker.

I've had a couple of sets of Kent Armstrong humbucker sized p-90's over the years. I quite liked them.
