Hi all
I've been the proud owner of a Z Wreck combo with half power switch. I absolutely love the amp, but sometimes it can be a bit much to wrestle with volume wise in some of the venues I play. I've been contemplating adding second Z amp, and was thinking the Maz 18 MKII might give me some of that EL84 mojo in a more manageable (and dare I say more versatile) package.
I've played around with a couple attenuators, but I think I'd be better serviced in smaller gigs with a well thought out master volume circuit.Ihearthe new MKII master volumes are excellent. Anybody have a Z Wreck and Maz 18 MKII side by side? Will it get me what I'm looking for?

I know you were considering the Maz 18, but you might want to consider the 38 for bigger headroom on the clean platform. I do think that the Maz 18 and a pedal of flavor can get you to most places.

I had a Z-Wreck, have a Stingray now.... Plus a Maz 18 Mk.II.
The Maz 18 sounds just like what you're looking for! It'll nail Vox tones, some Fender tones (Blackface to Tweed), even cop some Marshall tones....But excels at "Dr. Z" tones. Has a clean tone that will rival the Z-Wreck and Stingray and the master volume is, IMO, better than an attenuator....It just works!
Volume wise, it's the loudest 18w amp alive! But, that great master volume can really make it usable at any size venue. From the acoustic gig at the coffee house, to a club of 200 people, to a stage in front of 20,000 people (of course, your mic'ing the amp).
Only down side to getting a Maz 18 Mk.II......You probably won't be playing your Z-Wreck near as much! My poor Stingray has only seen 3 shows since October.

Thank you both for the input. I have read the Maz 38 has more Fender flavor, is that true? I really want rude, British EL84 tones in a lower volume package. It pains me that I can play the Z Wreck louder at my house than I can at clubs. I'm still going to keep the Z Wreck, maybe get a Maz 18 head to put on top of the Z Wreck to have a back up amp handy.

The Maz 38 and the Maz 18 are the same circuit, so to answer the question, no, the Maz 38 does not have more of a Fender Flavor, that is unless you want it to be. I use my Maz 38 for a bluesey thing lately and the core is British. The Maz 18 can be very rude, especially if you step on a cool pedal. Now if you want your balls to rattle then use a Maz 38 and step on a Wampler SLO, a Triple Wreck or Panama, or whatever flavor you want. I thing the Maz 38 and the Triple Wreck loosened some build up in my prostate, so I say its a medical wonder.

Here's a great video of what a Man 38 is capable of with the right set of fingers playing it!
