hi all. new member here. had a maz 18 1x12 for about 6 months and i`m well impressed. it works well for my cleanish and low gain stuff with a few pedal but i`m joining a new covers band which is heavier. think foo fighters as a rough tone guide. the maz has been a great `big` sounding amp but it`s a bit loose on the bottom end for hard rock chugging. any recommendations for pedals i should try to help out? i`m happy to spend if i`ve got too. cheers, dave.

I have been using the Paul Martin Panama for Modded Marshall Tones, it's tight.
I recently acquired a Wampler SloStortion, it is bad arse, along with that acquisition was the Wampler Triple Wreck, The can get real chunky.

A simple volume boost like the TC Spark Plug does a great job pushing my 18NR over the top. I was getting great tones at last night's gig using it. I had the gain around 9:00 and the Volume up around 1:30-2:00. T&B at noon, it really rocked. Especially good with a low output guitar like an old Strat.
For chugging try a Rat. No kiddin'!

I just happen to have one right here. Let's see how that goes

Just got a jam pedals rattler which is a rat style distortion box. It’s a new style of pedal for me so there’s a bit of a learning curve but I can dial in anything from light drive to fuzz. Im pushing it with a ryra and it fattens up real nice. Can go light drive to fuzz and everything in between.
What surprised me the most was how dynamic this pedal is and how well it works with the guitar volume. It can be a bit bright but that comes with the territory of rat pedals. I feel like a pedal like the rat makes perfect sense when used live at gig volumes. When I run it through my z lux at gig levels at home the rattler just kills and cleans up with my volume knob. Jam is doing something right in Greece! 🇬🇷

You're going to get a lot of recommendations! I just picked up a Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe V.2.. It replaced my XTS Atomic Overdrive. Very similar, but the Wampler has more gain on tap and feels a bit more "alive" than the XTS...But, the XTS has more EQ control and is a pedal I'm thinking of keeping around and re-visiting again later (it's my 2nd one). I had a Triple Wreck a few years ago..Great pedal, but more of a 1-trick pony than the Pinnacle, IMO. it excels at high gain (and fuzz, with the boost), but I didn't like it. The Pinnacle isn't a NU-Metal pedal, but can get pretty close to those chugga tones. It can definitely get you in the bands you mentioned. Here's a live, phone recording, clip from last nights gig (ignore the wrong chord at the beginning - when the drums come in). This is a single coil Telecaster, into the Pinnacle Deluxe, into my Maz 18....Sounds even meaner with a humbucker! (sorry about the quality, but you get the idea....the pedal just sounds huge!) Here's a clip I did with the Triple Wreck into my Stangray (using a Tele with Single coils): With lead: soundcloud.com/tele_jas/triple-wreck-in-to-dr-zNo lead: soundcloud.com/tele_jas/triple-wreck-into-dr-z

I have a Maz 18 and Xotic Effects' SL Drive is, in my opinion, what you're looking for. (With the dip switch setting to Super Bass.)

I use a (Fulltone) Plimsoul for the most compressed/distortion stuff. It has two gain stages so you can add distortion on top of the overdrive. It seems to be one pedal that is welded to my board. Worth checking out regardless...

For chugging try a Rat. No kiddin'! Seriously! You might scoff at the idea, but try it and you'll see--a good Rat (or clone) does an amazing job at mid-90s heavy rock & grunge and that includes Foo Fighters too. Mine's a Keeley-modded one with the "correct" chip, and I'll never let it go.

I got a ZVex Double Rock a couple weeks ago and have had some fun with the Maz. It can be a Box of Rock or a SHO. I also felt that the amp liked my Lovepedal MKII. It did mild fine, and fuzz really nice.

I've tried most of my collection of low to medium gain OD pedals, as well as clean boosts, and I can tell you that there is a bad sound to be found so far. At first, I was taken aback because I've always found that certain pedals don't just give certain amps any love. The Maz is simple the best foundation tone I've ever used. Using the Maz, I've given up the tried and true 'always-on' pedal to get the sound I need. That being said, there are times when you just need a good distortion pedal to fit the songs.
I would suggest the Thorpy Warthog. It is a fabulous, if a bit pricey, pedal that can do a whole range of tones from light crunch to full-on near-fuzz territory. I tried a whole series of pedals with my Maz, from transparent ODs to fuzz, but settled on the Warthog as the most flexible and best sounding without coloring the Maz foundation.
That being said, I don't think you could possibly go wrong with any of the suggestions so far!

Here are two additional overdrive suggestions to consider. My MAZ 18 Reverb head runs into a 1x12 Dr Z cabinet. I run my overdrives in front of the amp.
For low-gain close-to-transparent overdrive, I really like my Greer Amps Lightspeed. It can easily be used as an "always on" pedal. The Lightspeed works well with clean tones, edge of breakup and over-driven tones.
A low-to-medium gain option, with some tone coloring and a separately controlled boost, is the Shin's Music Dumbloid B. There's just something about the way this pedal mixes with my MAZ that's pure magic! It brings a vocal character out of the mids that just grabs me. Shin's Dumbloids are expensive pedals - I had to save my pennies for quite a while and it was worth the wait.
Hope this is helpful!

The Z-Drive is the perfect Maz pedal.
