Just wanted to relate an issue I just experienced. I put some NOS 12ax7s in one of my amps (Matchless DC30) some time in the last year. I was playing on Sunday and noticed the volume was erratic. Only happened on the 12ax7 side for channel 1. EF86 side had no issues. So it had to be V1 or V2. Everything else is shared on the EF86 side. I switched out the 2 NOS 12ax7s for some new JJ ECC83s. Problem is gone now and the amp sounds better than it did with the NOS. Frustrating that the NOS tubes gave up the ghost but really glad the JJs sound so good.... I can buy 6 or 7 of them for the price of 1 NOS tube. Once the amp was sorted, I could hear that my Klon was acting up as well ( static type noise) . I think that is related to power supply adapter with the phono plug not fitting too well. All the issues went away when I went to battery power. Still need to check the Voodoo Lab PS2+ to make sure there is no issue with that output wise. For now all is good to go. I just wish NOS would have been more resilient life span wise. Thanks for listening. Just wanted to share.

try cleaning your pedal power supply cables with some electronic cleaner, may help with your noise problem

The old ones may not have been NOS, may have been handled a lot, just old or possibly just not great examples of their heritage. I’ve had a number of them that had early demises with DC30 or other hot supplies.

Sometimes “NOS” and “POS” share more than we wish.

We've all been told that "they don't make 'em like they used to" and that NOS tubes are going to be far better than new-production stuff. But I've been bitten, too, when I install some fancy NOS tube in V1 (where it's likely to do the most good) and within a week or two it's crackling & squealing. Especially true with those 12AX7's, which as Doc himself has said, all that's left is just stems 'n' seeds.
