New to the forum and Dr Z amps in general.
I just picked up a 2001 Maz 38 and thinking about sending it in for the MKII update. I like the new dual-gang PPI-MV over the single currently in there. I also would like to have better reverb as well, so the MKII update will give me that.
My question is, should I include the 1/2 power switch or will the new Master be enough?
Also, the speaker is a Celestion V12-60, not really my thing, a bit bright. How is the G12 70th Anniversary? I know it's only 30w, but I've seen some in Maz 38's. Any other recommendations on speakers?

Welcome to the Forum! A lot of great people and information here! Here are some speakers that sound good with it - the Eminence Z12, Celestions Ruby and Gold, Green backs, and the G12 65 all sound good to me. I'm sure a lot of people will chime in here. Good luck in your tone search!

Thanks for your reply and recommendations.
So far I've tried a '66 Jensen C12N I use in my Tweed Deluxe, didn't care for it in the Maz 38, a Celestion vintage 30, much better than the V12-60 that is in there currently and a few 60s CTS alnico and ceramic speakers. I haven't found anything I really like yet. I did plug into my 1977 Marshall 4x12 cabinet with G12M "black-backs", 75hz, that sounds great, but looking for a single speaker to carry as a combo for my gigs.
Currently I'm using a 1965 Deluxe Reverb, 1966 Vibrolux Reverb or a Marshall HW Bluesbreaker for most gigs. Not looking to match this tone and i don't really want an American sounding speaker, more likely a Celestion sound.

Yes, welcome to the forum. I have a 2013 Maz Sr reverb and I am considering sending it in for the MKII upgrade and the half power switch. I can't speak about the MKII master volume yet, but one of the main reasons I want to send the Maz in is for the 1/2 power switch. The Maz sounds better with the master volume set past noon and the 1/2 power option would seem beneficial to achieve that setting without it getting too loud. Not sure if this master vol setting situation still applies with the MKII design, but amps in general sound better opened up. The 38 watts is pretty loud as you know and essentially having a Maz Jr at 18 watts could fit into many situations; especially playing at home. I figure while you spend the money to send it in, might as well get the 1/2 power switch as well. I have a Jaz 20/40 and really like the wattage option of switching between 20 and 40 watts. At home it is usually at 20 watts due to volume. Had a Remedy in the past with the 20/40 watt option as well.
I do not know about the speaker you have, but as Mike mentions, I can say that the Z-12 and gold sound great with the amp. The G12 70th anniversary ships with the Maz as well if you want it. Mine came with one and it sounded good with a lot of low end if you wanted, but I am not as much of a fan of that speaker on its own. It is good, but I don't like it as much as others. I forgot that I also have a G12m-65 creamback that sounds pretty good with it too. The creamback is also less efficient so you can open up the amp a little more and keep the volume down a little bit. The Z-12 is a great all around speaker imo. I have used it to twang with a tele and all out rock it with my Mesa JP-2C and it sounds great. Depends on your style of music and guitar selections as well.

Thanks, yeah, I wan't to avoid the low end. It seems the Maz 38 has tons, I pretty much turn off the bass at this point. I'm hoping the MKII update with fix some of that.
Instead of the 1/2 power switch, what about throwing in the Brake-lite? I feel this will give me more options on volume.
I don't have a Gold or creamback to try, but typically the Gold seems to sound good in most everything.

I play my Maz Sr with an air brake at home. Due to the 38 watts it is braked down a lot to 4 or bedroom setting as I try to keep it down at home for my family and for my hearing. For my uses, I am really trying to clamp down on a fairly loud amp, so for me at home, the 18 watt option is very appealing. Then I will have an amp for various uses; at home, small turn it down clubs, or can open it up clubs, sometimes with a loud drummer.
Yeah the gold seems to sound great with most amps. The blue and gold speakers are very efficient so will be louder than any less efficient speaker of course, but sound so good.
