Hey guys! Just wanted to see what speakers you all have tried and loved with the z-lux. I have a 1x12 combo with a 16 ohm z-12 speaker, but I also have an 8 ohm WGS ET-65 and a well broken in 8 ohm cannabis Rex. Just put the cannabis Rex in the combo last night and I have the et65 in a dr z convertible 1x12 cab. Didn’t have a chance to turn up last night, but I will a/b these speakers in the coming few weeks.
Just wanted to see what your favorite speakers have been so far. I know the z12 gets a lot of love and rightfully so, but just curious to see what you all have tried.
Anyone put an alnico cream through its paces with the lux?

Trojanhoy - Long story short, after trying both a Fat Jimmy C1270 and a Jupiter 12LC (both 8 ohm), I went back to the Z-12. I had the luxury of of trying all of them on stage, and the Z-12, to my ears, pairs perfectly with the Z-Lux combo. Both the Fat Jimmy and the Jupiter are variations on 50s Jensens, btw. They were close the Z-12, but not quite as nice for the amp. YMMV, of course. And, for the record, I bought another Z-12, just to have a spare. Cheers!

Does the difference in impedance influence the tone?

Does the difference in impedance influence the tone? Mine came stock with the 8 ohm Z-12 (as you know, all Z-Luxes come with 4, 8, or 16 ohm taps). I've not had the surplus time (or budget, really) to check out the tonal variations between the 8 and 16 ohm versions of a given speaker, though I've been VERY interested in doing so. In theory, from my limited understanding, a 16 ohm speaker will use everything the transformer has to give it. Will that make it sound "better"? I dunno. Will that limit or permit more overtones from/to the speaker? I dunno. I'd love to hear some more thoughts on the subject from those who have actually A/B such a thing.

I've tried a whole bunch. G12H30, Texas Heat, EVM12-L, Creamback 65, ET-65, V30...and right now I've got a Gold in it. I've always ended up going back to the Z-12 though. We'll see how long the Gold lasts, but for now I'm diggin' it. I've got a gig coming up in a couple of weeks and I'll see how it sounds live then.

You didn’t like the et-65?

The ET-65 is great and I did like it. But I think the Z-12 beats it in the Z-Lux. That speaker (ET65) works well in my Maz 18 too, but right now I'm teaming it with a Carmen Ghia and it's sweet.

I went back to the Z12 after trying a G12H30, A Blue, and Creamback. Sounds the best to me. I also changed out the power tubes to Tung Sol 5881 and have started cranking my middle control to 3:00 or more. To my ears, its the best tone.

I've tried a Gold, a Creamback G12M65, and the Stock Z-12. The Z-12 quickly won that battle...

For the past few years my main speaker cab was a Z-Best with a V30 and G12H. I recently picked up a 15" (mostly closed back) cabinet with a Celestion fullback 15" and it's become my new favorite cab/speaker to play through. For reference I mainly play in a punk/rockabilly band. My main guitar is a G6118t (hollowbody Gretsch). Always at least slightly overdriven.

Why not have the best of both worlds and run the Z 2x10 with Z10” and Gold 10”? Although, to be fair I’m not sure how much (if at all) the Z10 shares with the Z12 in terms of tonal qualities. I love the way the cab sounds with the zlux, a tad on the heavy side though with the 10” gold.

I'd be all over that but my Z-10 is 16 ohms and my Celestion Gold 10 is 8 ohms. So it would be considerably louder than the Z speaker. I bet they'd be a good pair though.
