Joe Walsh says an SG doesn't sound good until it's had a headstock repair from it falling on its back. I think he's right. I've got one with a repair and it sounds great. Mine has 2 P-90s.

Opinion Alert.
The SG is the one guitar I’d shy away from buying online. They very drastically and to really know if it’s a good one it has to sound good unplugged and you have to try it with a strap standing up to see if it’s gonna be stable tuning wise.

My initial reaction would be that it's a cheap knock-off if it doesn't have a truss rod cover. Because if it doesn't have a truss rod cover, how are you going to adjust the truss rod? Oh yea...it DOESN'T HAVE a truss rod because it's a rip off Chinese POS.
Now this is all speculation. But I've never heard of a Gibson not having a truss rod cover.
Google "Chinese Les Paul fakes"....and you'll get lots of information. I know it says les paul...but the same fakery applies.

Thanks. The one I found on Craigslist has a truss rod cover but it just doesn't say 'SG' on it. Did some come with no logo? was it replaced at some point? just have to use my best judgement i suppose

I've had experience that proves all ES335s are not created equal so i understand.

That looks like a recent 60s reissue. I have one in black that I bought new last year from a local brick and mortar store that is the DC area’s largest Gibson dealer. It looks legit, my truss rod cover is blank as well. I think most of them are in fact. I love mine.

If it is a good price, I’d snag it. The 2019s come with the large pickguard with humbuckers mounted in it. I much prefer to have the pickups and rings mounted directly to the body as in the one pictured above.
