I'm looking for a boost pedal that is NOT a clean boost. I don't need a overdrive or distortion box. my main sound is from my amp. I have a MK423 boost and love it. best pedal I've ever had. but I just wanted another boost to go with it for a little different color. something with some hair on it. I had a EP booster when they came out and wasn't thrilled with it.

Ron has a Leaping Lizard Draconis for sale on the board for really cheap - two boosts in one pedal. You can set one for clean and the other side can be set for dirtier sounds. They can run either by themselves or together.

What would be the difference between a “dirty boost” and an overdrive (like a fulldrive and similar)?

I like the lovepedal Tchula. It's a boost on one side and another overdrive boost on the other side its two COT50's in one pedal. Josh explains in this video what this pedal will give you and it does give you some nice dynamics to your tone. I have had a few of his different versions and the Gold one is the one I have now it has less gain then some of the other ones. It also has a smoother tone to it. The volume jump on it is more subtle than some of the other ones I tried. Its real warm sounding to me and works well with my guitars which both have 69 and 65 pick ups.

What would be the difference between a “dirty boost” and an overdrive (like a fulldrive and similar)? I've heard boost that stay basically clean and transparent. (boy do I hate that word) my 423 has 1 knob. as your turn it up, it does get a little hairy. why it does, I don't know. I don't build them, I just use them. but the Ep booster I had was a boost, but to me it colored it a little. that's what I'm looking for, but just a different color, a little more breakup than normal, but NOT breakup in a overdrive sense.

I sold mine a few months back, but the Lizard Leg Flying Dragon was great at that "One Knob" boost pedal. If you can find a used one you like it - Steve stopped making them years ago.

I have an MK423 on my main board, too--great, great clean boost, plus it looks really cool. Best dirty boost is a tougher call--the one I use on my smaller board is a TC Mini Spark boost--one knob, volume plus a bit of gain--the more volume, the more gain. You could also go with a Klon-type pedal, of which there are a great many these days. The Klon KTR's good, but so is the Archer Ikon, but the real bargain is the EHX Soul Food--sounds exactly like the KTR, for my money. But--the best sounding dirty boost on the planet, to my ear, may be the Timmy, set up with the EQ wide open, just a touch of drive and the volume to taste. Also a bargain, even at new retail.

I have a Flying Dragon and it's okay, but I like the Mini Spark better. TC makes great pedals for the price.

The Bad Bob Boost (which I think Analog.Man is currently building & selling) is a really nice "extra" boost with some bite/hair on it--not totally clean like your Mk4.23.
Another great option would be the Xotic RC-booster, which can be totally clean if you want; but the "gain" knob lets you dial in some grit as needed. Super, super versatile pedal useful in LOTS of situations--I love mine.

The tchula has that hair extra thing your taking about and I also like the archer icon I had a few of those as well that did that kind of thing.

I had a EP booster when they came out and wasn't thrilled with it. May I suggest a Beano Boost...? From the aNaLoG.MaN website, "This is the Analog Man Beano Boosttm, a simple looking yet effective pedal. This pedal is based on the 1960s British Dallas Rangemaster, which was best at the time to give a treble and gain boost to the dark British amps. This allowed them to get a sound more in tune with the time, as guitars were starting to become a loud, bold, lead instrument. This pedal is a type of BOOSTER, not really a distortion pedal nor a clean boost- it does modify your sound quite a bit. It excites certain frequencies and pushes your amp to allow it to create rich tube distortion. The pedal colors your tone, with a crunchy overdrive, boosting certain frequencies, and warming the tone with NOS germanium transistors. It does not have a lot of compression and sustain like most OD pedals, but a more raw, open sound. This pedal has three tone settings from the tone switch- Center is a treble boost, the same as the original Dallas Rangemaster. UP is a fuller-frequency mid range boost (MID setting). Down is a LOW range, also quite a full frequency sound. Optionally we can install a push/pull switch (built into the volume knob) for 2 tone selections (treble and mids) but this option is not as good so we rarely build them. The Beano Boost is spectacular into an amp that is already cranked up pretty well. It will also work well into a clean amp, but you probably need to turn the volume on the pedal up, to make the tone thicker by hitting the amp harder and making it work more."www.analogman.com/beano.htm

I’d also recommande the Bad Bob Boost, really great in that not clean boost role.

The Xotic RC Booster is exactly what you have described. It can be a clean boost with EQ in the right places and then you can dial in just the right amount of hair. It's not really a dirt pedal. I have described it on the forum as a "fixer" pedal. Plus you can find them all day on Reverb for less than $100.

I highly recommend the Analogman Bad Bob Boost. Unlike a lot of AMan pedals, it can had for under its retail price and even retail isn’t all that bad. He is now making a two knob version with a drive knob. That’s what I have and I could live without the drive knob. I mostly keep it cranked (which is the same as the one knob version). It’s too clean otherwise.

I've had the single knob version (twice actually), and even if I liked it very much, I may have found it not clean enough sometimes. My all times favorite is the Sex Drive though, but I think it would be too clean for what Helmi is after...

I didn’t like the gain it had at 9v (too much and not really what I was looking for). It’s a totally different animal at 18v. Much cleaner which is why I keep the drive cranked. I had to back the drive off with 9v, but it didn’t have the same character so I went back to 18v. For what it’s worth, I also had the Beano Boost (as the left side of my SunLion), but I sold the SunLion and got a Sunface after getting the Bad Bob. For what I do, the Beano was always too bright or too dark depending where I placed the toggle. However, the Beano in its normal (bright) position is great for neck pickups.

You might check out the JHS Crayon - I don't have one but I've been eyeing it lately. It can get quite fuzzy, but does the "not clean" boost thing too.

I'd second the recommendation of the Beano Boost. The RC booster is a close second but they have different breakup tones. The Beano shines with an edge of break up amp. You can kick the amp up and get some great hair on the tone. You can leave the pedal on and then dial back the volume on your guitar for the various tones. I do have the Bad Bob, too. I don't run it cranked but it's a great warm boost, too. The RC version 2 is great for bringing the edge forward and then having another level of gain on tap so you can get more oomph. There are many options and if you can get a friend or two to let you check them out you can find the one that works best for your needs.

I’m still in the honeymoon phase but I am really liking the Buffalo FX 18v Power Booster. It has a tone of volume on tap and the EQ knobs can both cut and boost dramatically. I use mine with the treble at 2 o’clockish which adds a lot of bite to the very polite and smooth Filtertrons in my 290. The Gain knob goes from clean boost (up to noon) to transistor overdrive (noon to 4ish) to Tonebender fuzz (4 to 5).

I'd second the recommendation of the Beano Boost. I think the Beano boost does sound nice from clips I've seen. It's just that the used prices, ($290 and up) are outrageous. has anyone tried the new Xotic super sweet? that looks interesting.

I don’t know what’s going on with the secondhand prices on these right now. Just a month or so ago they were going for 150-180. I’d wait around for that price to come back or buy new.

has anyone tried the new Xotic super sweet? that looks interesting Read more: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/82091/clean-boost?page=1#ixzz5ntKSsWbNI have it on my board at the moment. It's fatter, fuller and cleaner than the EP boost but it's not a "gain/color" pedal to my ears. It thickens your tone and can help you step out of the mix if needed. I found that with my P90 guitars the mid range really honks in standard dip switch settings. Using one of the cuts made it less mid humpy. I really like it as an always on pedal or stacking it w the Beano in front. I got my Beano Boost mini used on reverb for less than $200. Keep an eye out and they're around. I don't use any drives nowadays bc the range of gain with the two pedals together and an amp. I can't do high gain tones but that's not really my jam. More Robben Ford/ Larry Carlton type tones w this rig.

This may be a little more than you are looking for here, but this is my next pedal purchase. The Dry Bell Unit 67. It's a combo pedal with (i) 1176-style compressor, (ii) volume boost, (iii) Dallas rangemaster-type mid boost and (iv) EQ. There are several demos out there and I think it's really neat. Handmade in Croatia

I believe the newer ones might be 9v now. This might be the hair your looking for. chey
