So today I traded into a Jaz 20/40 with another forum member here. My initial thoughts were that it was thin and buzzy. I had the volume high, master low mids and treble cranked. Then I thought to myself, man this thing is a deluxe reverb.... backed treble off to 10:30 scooped the mids bass at at 11:00 dimed the master and BAM! Beautiful blackfaced fender golden age goodness! The downside the reverb is weak and introduces some hum turned up. To be fair my other Z is a EZG 50 which may have the best onboard reverb I’ve ever heard. The trem is glorious! Thick throbbing and Musical. A couple of owners ago someone put it a jenson c12n which I’m not a fan of in general. What did these come stock with? I’d like something a little bigger/rounder sounding and smoother in the highs. No traffic here for a while. For what it’s worth I’ve owned the ZLux and I prefer the jaz. Go figure..

This was my JAZ.
I too prefer the JAZ to the Z Lux by a long shot.
That amp came stock with a G12H30.
I tried a bunch of different speakers in it, and ended up with that reissue C12N for deluxe reverb tone.
I also thought it sounded better with the 5881 tubes- beefier and louder and cleaner.
I also thought it sounded best with a NOS RCA 5751 in V1.

Regarding speakers, for what it's worth the only amp I own anymore is an EZG-50 head that I run with Two EVM12L speakers.
Just switched from two jensens, and even tried tow old JBL K120s.
The EV's rule for me.

Small world! The EZG is my number one right now as well. I’m running it into a Z convertible cab loaded with a Celestion Red Back and it sounds Massive. I’ll need to try the 5751 in v1 when I get a hold of one. It had a just 12au7 in v3 I swapped it out for an NOS 12AT7 and I’m diggin the reverb much more now. I ran the EZG and the jaz in Stereo today and it was glorious.

I've tried a bunch of speakers in mine. I'd suggest a WGS G12C/S if you want a rounder smoother tone.

I think the JAZ works better through two Z-10's. The cabinet baffle can be easily changed. If you don't want to do that I suggest the Z-12. It is a much better fit than the G12H30.

I second the Z12, but from a ZLux perspective as I don’t own a Jaz.

We not this damage the amp?

Doc has only recommended medium range re-issue Tung-Sol 5881's as a substitute. I ran the stock JJ 6V6's in mine for a long time with success. I recently changed to those 5881's. I like them, but not necessarily any better than the JJ's. With a couple of adjustments of tone controls I'm pleased with either tube.

I suggested the G12 c/s earlier for a smoother warmer tone. I should also say that I'm currently using a G12M creamback 65w and really like it.
