I'm curious where folks set their single coil heights at: Low to the body vs close (as reasonable) to the strings. Any comments on setup or how the height affects tone / playability would be dandy as well. I struggle with the warmth close to the body vs clarity and output thing...

I'm a middle man, too close to the strings is too spanky for me, too far away it too weak sounding for me. my 2 cents, Todd

I mentioned in another thread that the Fralin Vintage Hots I put on my 81 strat had to be lowered considerably or they squealed at full volume and overdrive. Lindy says to start at 1/16” on the treble side and 1/8” on the bass side, then adjust to taste (or if you’re really geeky measure and normalize the output). I had to lower the pickups a lot.
On my other guitars I’m closer to those basic settings - generally I want as much output as I can get because I then get more control with the guitar’s volume knob.

It varies by guitar, but I’m mostly a middle height man. So much of it is what the guitar seems to say what it wants to sound like, and how do I make it do that? Maybe I’d move it closer if I was shredder dude, but I’m not.
I have liked most of my Rics and at least one strat out of the box, but they were exceptions to my usual- somewhat painstaking- method of having to spend a lot of time in setup.

I do pretty much the same thing, bring them up to where they're bright and punchy enough, but won't give the wobbly "Stratitus" tone. Then I drop them down to where the sweetness is, and then hunt for a happy medium.
