Hi everybody,
I bought a 2nd hand EZG last week and started rehearsing with it yesterday. What I found is that while the cleans sound beautiful, the overdrives sound nasal. Pedals I've tried are Timmy, Klon clone and a RAT. Cab is a 1x12 with a WGS ET90, open back.
Anyone else is experiencing this? I pretty sure I'm doing something wrong

I use mine with a 1x12 open back cab with an Alnico Gold and it’s glorious. I suggest you to crank the mids while using OD pedals.

Thanks for your reply. I'll give it a try this afternoon during rehearsal

While I haven’t played that particular amp yet, I’ve found Doc’s eq section to be very malleable. I would definitely suggest setting it with your ears instead of your eye for what feels right.

I agree with what others have said here, speakers make a big difference with the EZG. The Z-10's work great with the amp, but even Vintage 30's sound pretty good with it. I like the cabinets to have open back, closed back has too much bass for my ears.
I use the RYRA Klone pedal and stack other overdrives into the EZG. My favorites have been the KoT, Barber Gain Changer and Barber 1/2 Gainer. But most I've tried sounded pretty good with it.
It took me about a month or so to really gel with the amp. I don't have the bass mod on my amp, but have found the sweet spot is with the bass knob almost all the way down to zero (or maybe 1). Also I usually have the mid knob around 11:00 o'clock. If your running mid hump pedals, with the mid knob up past 12:00 it will get honky.
I'd say experiment with different speakers, cabinets, pedals and the amp EQ. You should find some great overdrive sounds.

I play mine through an Avatar 4x10 and it sounded great with the stock speakers, clean or OD. I just upgraded to 2x Eminence Legend 1028K and 2x WGS G10C and it sounds even better, glorious might be the word I’m looking for.
I have also played my guitar and pedalboard through an Orange TC30 12” combo and an old Traynor 4x10 and find I have to tweak my OD settings to match the amp and speakers.
I have a Timmy, OCD and a modded Sparkle Drive on my board and they all sound great through the EZG-50. In fact this amp takes pedals better than any other amp I’ve owned.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
I'm coming from a Maz Jr, so I'm well aware that speakers are important and I shouldn't worry about 'weird' EQ settings. If I'm not mistaking the ET90 I'm using is a G12-65 equivalent, which is more or less a higher watt Greenback. I thought many were happy with that speaker in combination with the EZG.
I've dimed the mid and it helped a bit.
Next I turned down the Pre (using it as volume knob) and put the Post on 3 o'clock. Much better. Clean sounded even fuller and the nasal overdrive sound was almost gone.
Disadvantage is the amp makes much more noise with the Post volume up. Is this normal behaviour?
One thing I should add is the following: I rehearsed with a new band this weekend, and they keep the volume really low. I start to wonder if this is also a factor. I mean, a 50watt amp isn't made to play at low volume levels. If somebody has time, could you please give it try to play and see if you're overdrive sounds a bit nasal at low volume?

Something doesn't seem right. Mine would be mud city with the mids dimed. I go back and forth on the pre and post but lately I like them parallel. It sounds the most complex and rich to me that way. It is the most versatile 50 watt amp I have played as long as I have pedals for dirt. It sounds great quiet, I have a music room in the basement and I can play while my wife watches TV upstairs and still love my tone. I have never been able to play it loud enough to get a good overdrive. It does get a little noisy if the pre and post are both turned up, especially if I have the reverb turned up as well.
Do you have an amp tech you trust? I would take it in and have them check it out. Maybe as simple as a bad tube.

I'm suspecting too that it's a tube thing.
I'm not sure, but it even looks like the tubes have never been replaced.
The power tubes are Groove Tubes but with a logo I've never seen. Like these: link
I'm planning to check the Pre-amp tubes this evening. In the manual I see: V1 - 12AX7, V2 - NOS 12AT7, V3 - 12AX7, V4 - 12AT7
If I'm not mistaking 12AX7 and 12AT7 are interchangeable right?
What do you mean with parallel? Like when you put the Pre on 10 o'clock, you put the Post on 10 o'clock as well?

Technically yes, a 12at7 can exchange with a 12ax7, but it’s generally not a good sound in an audio path. The 12at7 lowers gain, but is often brittle sounding. In a spot like a reverb driver, the voltage will kill a 12ax7 faster than a 12at7. A better sub for lower gain is a 5751 or even a 12ay7 for a 12ax7, or a 12au7 for the 12at7.

Those are supposed to be good power tubes. I would have a tech check the bias of your amp before just wholesaling them.

Those are the Groove Tubes GE copy 6L6 tubes. They are probably my favorite modern 6L6 left after the closure of the Winged C factory. I’d guess that a PI or pre tube was going, but it could still be these.
If you’re replacing tubes, I suggest doing it one at a time (or pair for output tubes) so you know what did what to your tone. Let us know how it goes. Have as much fun with this as you can.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I decided to bring the EZG to an amp tech. I was getting feedback on living room volume level yesterday... The amp definitely needs some love. The nasal sounding overdrive pedals might as well be a tube problem.
I’ll report back when the amp is back home.

Update:
My EZG has new power tubes and the bass mod and the nasal tone with overdrive pedals is gone. What a great amp!

I’m glad you got it fixed! Now play with the pre and post and the tone controls, they are interactive, and enjoy the tonal bliss. Crank the reverb and blast some Miserloo! I like some OD and a slap back delay. It’s like **** Dale meets Link Wray!
