I've been playing D'Addario strings for about 50 years, and I've only had this happen in the last six months. I had a high E string that was making strange harmonics is the best way I can describe it. I should have recorded it. I spent a good hour going over the guitar, looking for something rattling or some cause of this, and finally just put a new string on it. Problem solved. I had the same thing happen on another guitar, this time my new Explorer and this time it was the B string. Same thing, same solution. It was a bad string. I couldn't find anything physically different with the strings, they weren't kinked and had no rough spots or other obvious defects. Have any of you ever had this happen?

I’ve never had any issues with D’Addario strings! But, even some of the best things can have a flaw from time to time. Maybe you got a bad run?

Yes and it could be season?...all strings as russ said...been using david gilmours for my revstar...the 10.5 set...kind of digging them...more tension than daddarios...but juicy tone...I do clean with the ghs lube small rag...like cleaning a gun with gun oil...helps preserve...
Look at neck adjustment first!...my suhrs are very stable through seasons...sometimes it is a dropped saddle...give it the hairy eyeball...

I've had this happen , with D'Addario and Elixir ( I think Elixir sources the strings from D'Addario). Not all the time , just a few times and it drove me nuts because I thought it was a bridge saddle / bridge / nut slot/pickup height. Like you , finally changed the string and problem solved.Last time it happened I brought a precision digital caliper home from work and checked the string diameter all along its length , got numerous slight deviations reading out on the bad string. Also a couple of times the way the ball end was wrapped was defective.

This inconsistency with D’ strings is one of the reasons I won’t buy them. My issue was strings (D mostly) that would not intonate. Put another on and it was back to the old position for the saddle and all was fine. Kinda a piss off for me as I had bought 10 sets of their all nickel in my preferred gauge at the time as my local retailer does not stock them. Probably 50% of the sets had this problem. Just my experience. ME

For what it's worth , I've been having a lot of luck with strings I've been getting from "Stringjoy". Started using them a couple of months ago , and switched most of my guitars over to them. Eliminated tuning and intonation problems I was having on a couple. Not plugging them and no affiliation , just a happy customer.

looks like they make some nice custom sets...the 10.5 -50 You can also make up your own custom sets using the drop-down choices. By the way , I contacted them for some advice on gauges and the owner Scott replied next morning , very cool to deal with.

I just ordered a couple of sets. After 50 years it's time to try something new, yes?

Whenever I change strings on a guitar I put a note in the guitar case string pocket with the date I installed the strings. I can say I get several weeks longer playing time than I did with the D'Addarios and many weeks longer than I did with Ernie Ball. They don't last quite as long as Elixirs coated strings , but I feel they sound and perform better (stable tuning and intonation).

My friend had a problem with Martin strings. He contacted the company and told him about his problems and disappointments. He played Martin strings for 30 years. The CEO sent him a letter of apology and a case of strings. You might want to give it a try. As always, YMMV.

I just wrote a nice letter on their website, and copied and printed a hard copy that I mailed to CEO Jim D'Addario. I'll let you know what happens.

Interesting, I too have been using D'Addario strings for 30 years or so, and never had any issues, apart from when I bought three sets off eBay that turned out to be fake. I also had that strange overtone thing on one of my Strats a while ago but managed to cure it by sanding and polishing the bridge saddle.

D'Addario sent me a 10 pack of strings, plus 3 each of the high B and E strings.

Got some fret buzz on my Les Paul even when there are no strings on it. Just sent a letter to Gibson CEO. I'll let you know what happens.
