A friend has a white 1961 Strat body with a late 50's Jazzmaster rosewood fretboard neck (58 I think), and Dirty Works active pickups (forerunner to EMG) in a wooden pickguard. It's been years, and it may be the other way 'round, '58 body with '61 neck) The body's in fair shape and the neck is good. Original pickups may or may not be included...not sure. I played it 35 years ago and remember that it was really nice. It's been a case queen since then. What would be a fair offer on a hybrid like this? The guy that owns it doesn't play anymore and I've always wanted that guitar. I haven't seen him in years, since I moved away, and I'm going to visit in a couple of weeks. If he wants to sell, I want to buy. But I have no idea what a parts caster with vintage parts like this would be valued at. Help please, I want me some Deadwood and Wire!

Wow. Do you think they're just fishin'?

Hard to tell Dave. There were no other comps for actual sales nor was there anything on E-bay.

I think it should fetch somewhere between 4-5k, Dave....

Try this. Figure out what you are willing to pay and make him an offer. You can tell him that it's probably worth more on the open market and see what he says.

Agree with Todd, especially if he’s not actively looking to sell it. He may be very surprised at your offer and be very grateful, If he’s willing to sell it at all. But, I would not envision anything in the $4-$5K range, seems really high to me.

That's kind of where I'm coming from, I just am looking for a starting point. I'm taking a Strat with me and I was thinking of offering that plus $1500 or so. I'm just seeking an icebreaking offer, I really don't even know if he'd consider parting with it. He's got a lovely Les Paul Std. too, but I'm not interested in it.
It's tough because back in the day we were really tight, and I don't want to take advantage but at the same time don't want to over bid an opening offer.
Above all we're good friends from years ago, and that comes first.

Dave, why not give one of the vintage dealers a call (say Gruhn Guitars in Nashville), tell them your story and ask for their advice. They might help you out. Worth a 'phone call.

Why not just ask him if he’s ever consider selling. If so, then what would he want to get out of it. You are way better off to let him throw out the first number and then you respond to that rather than the other way around.

I agree with Jefferson. Have him price it to you. You probably have a feeling as to what it is worth to you, and you have the ability to say yes or no
