Was at a guitar shop in Atlanta this weekend, and had the opportunity to plug into a bunch of Z amps. Cure Z-Lux 1x12 combo Maz 18 1x12 combo Maz 18 NR 1x12 combo EMS w/ 1x12 cab DB4 1x12 combo Maz 18 NR w/ 1x12 convertible cab Z-Wreck head w/ 2x12 open back cab (also plugged it into the 1x12 convertible cab)
Best sounding amps were the Maz 18 Reverb combo and the Z-Wreck with the 2x12 cab. Maybe It's just me, but the Wreck sounds the best through the 2x12. Very open and airy, with a great feel. The 1x12 cab seemed like it was choking the amp a bit...not letting it breathe. Wish I could have really cranked the Wreck, because it was really doing it for me, but I was in a small shop and don't want to embarrass myself. Any other Wreck players notice the sonic differences between a 2x12 and a 1x12 (or combo)?

The 2x12 oval back Z Wreck cab sounds the best to me. I believe it was designed specifically for the Z Wreck amp. The speakers are wired in series as well which give the Wreck it’s sound and feel. Plus you have 2 speakers to spread out the sound.
Live you can get away with micing a single 1x12 but yes you are right. In a room a 2x12 wounds better.
A Z Wreck is one of those amps that you just have to try yourself as the magic doesn’t always come across in videos.

I've listen to as many Z-Wreck videos as I could find, and nothing prepared me for the in-person sound. Surprisingly, this was just the 2x12 open back cabinet, not the oval open back. I honestly didn't know that there was an oval open back until I looked it up! I think the 1x12 might have sounded better with one of the back panels removed. To me, closed back cabs are very focused and tight, which is great, but not my thing.

DC jhere! I have the Z-Wreck combo open back with Celestion gold - the first original design with speed & comfort setting at the back. (the blueish tolex) Have brought it a couple of time to the local blues jam in my hometown. Several visitors and jammers usually specifically ask me if they may play through it Because they love/like the sound. Given the diversity of players and their competence when the majority of them are amateurs Some very good - some not so much - I think it says something of the quality of Docs amps. ( many different people spontaneously wanting to use the Z-Wreck ) Cheers: Dixiechicken!
