Years ago I built a clone of a Tube Screamer, but I've never owned a 'real' one. Not long ago I bought a Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe that has a TS variant built into it as a boost function, and I liked it...so I decided to pop for a TS Mini. Should be fun! I've always wanted to pick one up but just never did for whatever reason. So for my overdrive addict buddies...I'm thinking that the front of the chain is the place for it, to boost the other drives. What suggestions would you have? Does a TS work better as a booster or as the boosted one?

Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of having 2 or 3 separate OD pedals on at once. I have 3 on my board, but they each serve a different purpose. That said, I usually (always?) put the boost first in line so I’m not boosting the noise from another pedal.

I like to set up my amp at edge of breakup, then drives at different levels of drive and volume settings. If you pick carefully and set them up right, I find that I can get amazing varieties of tone. You're right about the noise factor though...that can be a deal breaker with a lot of combinations.

I got an analogman modded tS808 late last year. Smooth as silk with my 335.

I always used it first. Level set just past half, drive off. The plain old tube screamers always get overlooked with all the boutique copies. But there is nothing wrong with the original. They are really good.

Congrats, Dave.....break out the strat .....Pride and Joy doesn't sound right w/o a TS....
OBTW, IMHO, I don't like a TS being boosted by another pedal...I love mine (Wampler Clarksdale Delta) either alone, or pushing my Xotic AC....
Enjoy!!!

I can't tell ya where you should put it but I can tell you what the different results may be.
First know that when stacking boosts/drives the last one in the chain will leave it's greatest foot print on your EQ.
That being said if the ts mini (which I just picked up myself about 2 weeks ago and I love it!) is meant to be a solo boost due it's natural bass attenuation combined with mid boost then i would make it the last drive pedal in your chain.
If instead the intended purpose is to use it as an "always on" or "often on as a flavor of rhythm tone" then your options are more open. If you prefer it's sound to your other drive pedals then still put it after them, but put it before them if you prefer to retain the EQ shape of your less colored drive pedals then keep the ts before those pedals. The second option will result in mostly retaining the EQ of your other drive pedals while having the option to goose them with the ts resulting in more gain.

I've always used any TS pedal variants I have stand alone. Its funny talking about the original Tube Screamers, I had one back in my youth. The guy at the local shop (there used to be two mom and pop guitar shops just about across the street from each other, the good old days right?) went on and on about how cool this new Tube Screamer pedal was. I bought one and didn't like it!!! It was "distorted enough" ha ha. I ended up getting a Pro Co Rat instead along with an Aria Pro Chorus. I would like to have all three of those pedals now. Back to your needs though Dave. I don't usually stack pedals, it just may be that I am not creative enough, but they always sound noisey to me when I stack them. Thats just me though. Enjoy the tone quest God bless, Todd

I had a TS mini...great little pedal that didn't sound bad at all. I just sold it as I picked up another OD and didn't feel the need to have extras laying around. Let us know what you think of it, Dave.

I agree with Lee. Mine is always the first OD and set for a relatively low level of drive. I have several TS's and the mini can hold it's own with any of them. Looking forward to your report Dave.

Lou, I can't wait to get the Plimsoul that I just bought from you. I just got the TS in the mail today and I think you're right, it sounds better early in the chain rather than later. I'll know better Monday when my Plim arrives from that great state of Texas.

TS first in line. Mostly I like them with the drive set fairly low.
