I purchased a Maz 18 2X12. It came with GT- el84 #6. The previous owner said they were original and have very low hours. When cranked with a Tele, the low E string would get flabby and overloaded.
I replace the preamp tubes with Svetlana 12AX7 like the Dr. said. Honestly, I didn't notice much difference. It did help the low end flabbiness a bit.
Then I replace the GTs with brand new set of JJ/Tesla el84 from the Tube Store, asking them for matched sets that fall into the category of a GT #6. First thing I noticed, it was louder. Second, it helped quite a bit with the low end flabbiness. A much tighter low end now.
Long story shorter: What I'm wondering, are the GT tubes bad? Is the flabbiness a sign of a el84 going bad? Should I keep them, or throw them away? ( purchased a second set of the JJ/Tesla so I already have backup)

EL-84's going bad will actually not give you the first sign at the low end. The highs will go first.

I'm not a believer in GT in the first place....I love my JJs. though! My experience is the tubes y start getting mechanically noisy. Lose some highs then just plain sound bad. That's where I'm at now with mine. I desperately need to retube it.
