Had a band I'm producing and playing with in the studio this weekend. Tracking on Saturday and OD's on Sunday. Did the tracking on Saturday with a dual 6V6 amp then yesterday I was about to do some cleaner stuff and looked at the MAZ 18JR in the stack of amps. Realizing this amp gets overlooked for the MAZ 8 (because of it's lower power and the pentode/triode switch) sometimes I figured I'd fire it up for the cleaner stuff I was doing. On the front panel are the china marks my tech put there when I was using 2 MAZ 18s. This one was set for 'cleaner' using the low input. I moved the knobs to the old marks, plugged my Jerry Jones 12 string into the low input and boom, there was the sound I was looking for. I ended up using it all day going through a Randall ISO cab loaded with a Celestion Gold 10" with a Brake-Lite in line and an AT ribbon mic on it. Used it for some loud stuff to just by moving the input to high and cranking the Volume. What a great amp. Still going strong for sure.

They are such a great amp. I went to a local blues bar on Saturday and the guitarist was using a Maz 18. - best tone I've heard in that club! He said he bought it New and hasn't played another amp since. Another desert isle amp from Doc!

The Maz 18 is a true classic. So versatile. Totally dependable.

Maybe a mute point but, has the good doctor put out a bad amp?

Maybe a mute point but, has the good doctor put out a bad amp? Only the ones that aren't in my possession!

I still believe the MAZ 18 is the gateway drug of Dr Z amps.

Used my Maz 38 on every gig for years, mostly with my Airbrake, and it always sounded good. Since I bought my 18 back in October though that's the one that gets the work, great amp!

I've had my 18 NR for a few months now and it's been awesome for home use and on gigs. I had always heard you have to crank it to get it to sound good and that kept me from buying one for over 10 years! I don't play loud and play mostly clean and it is fantastic.
I actually set the mid, cut and vol exactly as you have them there! ...using open back Z112 w/ a Gold. The bass, treble and MV vary for the room and volume I need to play at. And I use a brake-lite SA often. So happy I finally got one!

I still believe the MAZ 18 is the gateway drug of Dr Z amps. I completely agree on this, it was mine. Then got me a Remedy and sold my Maz to my then bandmate. It was hard to part ways with my beloved red one though I had it opposite me in the rehearsal space. Then I have finally been able to get it again from my former band mate and it has been a pleasure to have it back. The drug is still running through my veins, as I just got a KT 45... Definitely, the most versatile amp I’ve ever played. Tons of tone!!

Roscoe, that's the highest I think I've ever seen somebody put the "Bass" knob on their MAZ amp. (For big cleans, though, I can see that.) Really though, not a bad setting anywhere in those dials. My MAZ 18 Jr. NR is equally as much of a "gold standard" sound as any amp that might start with an F, M, V, or otherwise.

It worked great.

I have a Maz 18 combo and also have a Z-Lux. I love my Zlux but I love my Maz more! Theres something about the sound of single coils and a cranked Maz that just hits the sweet spot for me.
