I have a Maz18 Jr and Z-Drive I use with a variety of guitars from a Tele to a Strat to a PRS to an ES349. The Z-Drive is a great pedal but, if I want a less well-behaved / more raucous amount of OD / fuzz / distortion, what would be the best option, please? I'm also running a Seafoam + Chorus, Zero Point Flanger and Keeley Delay Workstation as part of the same chain, if that's relevant.
Ibanez Tube Screamer has been mentioned to me but I'm interested in options.

That combo gives me a great range of tasty OD tones. Also don't be surprised at how useful the By Pass Pedal can be for boosted OD tones.

Jeez, I would have thought the Z Drive would be your answer...it’s got all those ingredients. Personally, I run a Paisley Drive into a BB and love it. Have a TS mini and it rocks too.

Thanks to both. I haven't used the bypass pedal much, at all. I should have mentioned that this is for in my house as I'm learning guitar not gigging. I've got a Brake-Lite fitted so I can get the tubes singing. The Z-Drive is everything I need for most things but there are times when it stops a bit short of the level of distortion I'm after.
I'll check out the Tumnus (I've seen one of them) and the Paisley Drive. I'll also see what a gain changer can add. However, please forgive my ignorance but what is a "BB"?
Hope you both have a great Festive season.

Hope you both have a great Festive season. Are you stacking OD pedals or trying to get the sound from a single pedal? There are pedals that offer huge amounts of gain and nastiness. Keeley's Filaments comes to mind. Or you may want a fuzz. Lots of choices. If you've not seen it, I highly recommend checking out videos on YouTube from That Pedal Show. It is highly educational. Lastly, "BB" is the BB Preamp pedal from Xotic effects.

I'm not looking to stack one pedal on top of another. the Z-Drive will be fine for most occasions but, from time to time, I might replace it with another. I'll check out "Filaments" and the show you mentioned. Thanks for the detail on "BB". I haven't come across that previously. As with the others, I'm sure there'll be a demo out there. Many thanks.

+1 on the OCD. If you want a little extra compression and sustain along with a good bit of usable, ZZ-style dirt, you can pick up a mint OCD on Reverb for about $100.

I don't think the Tube Screamer fits what you are describing (although I love TS's for what they do).
The OCD is a good one. You might also look into the J Rockett Rockaway. It's their Archer (Klon) coupled with a built-in 6 band EQ. You can get a ton of sounds out of it.

Maybe Fulltone Plimsoul; it has a lot of range.

Less well-behaved / more raucous amount of OD/fuzz/distortion, that's easy. Volume knob controls gain.

I good germanium fuzz is also a nice option. You can get really nice lead tone and roll back your volume for some tasty blues licks as well as a nice clean tone. I have found that they work really well when your amp is on the verge of break up. I use the analogman sunlion fuzz. I like it better then my ramble fx marvel drive for lead tone. Sometimes I stack the fuzz with the marvel and then hit it with the archer icon on the back end. But even just by itself the anolgman sunlion gives me many usable tones.

These sound pretty raucous to me:
This with the fuzz knob up gets pretty fuzzy, but retains a lot of focus.
Also, this Mike Campbell/JHS pedal is pretty rad. The overdrive and fuzz together sounds so awesome!!

Well, I tried some of the recommendations (including the Tumnus and Il Diavolo) and liked them a lot. However, the one I settled on initially was one I hadn't expected - a Boss MT-2. Uber-noisy and not at all subtle. I thought that was what I wanted. However, I soon had a change of heart as the MT-2 only seemed to have one sound and not a lot of variability compared to others. So, I had a re-think and eventually went for a TS9DX. I went for the DX because the "tone" dial seemed to get me where I want to be. I really can't describe it and it was a close call. the other thing is that I have a variety of guitar types - Tele, Strat, PRS, ES349 and the TS9DX was the one that my ears preferred across the range.
Thanks, though, for your help and suggestions.

If you want EVH Brown sound levels of distortion then my personal recommendation from experience (and ownership lol) is the Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe. It's got an awesome amount of volume and gain in it plus a boost button that adds even more gain practically pushing you into fuzz territory. The guys from That Pedal Shoe did a nice video on this pedal vs the EVH 5150 vs the JHS angry Charlie. I really loved the angry Charlie as well, but I'm a Wampler fan for one and the angry Charlie has less options.

Gain Changer is hard to beat for price point and versatility. Right now I have a Hot Wired V2 and Keeley Tone Workstation on a small board that I'm using in both a hard rock and a soul band, into a Carmen Ghia and 2X10 Z cabinet. Very versatile, but larger bucks for sure.

I had forgotten how good the Gain Changer was so when I was looking for a TS style boost a few weeks ago I found a good deal for one on Reverb and remembered how much I missed that pedal. I love how it does both the mid hump thing and totally flat and clear, plus low or high gain. Really versatile drive. Plus they sell used in the low $100's all day!

I've gotten off the OD train lately and moved on to boosts, but the Gain Changer and KoT are always classic choices that just get the job done...

I guess the fact that no matter how much I try to kick the Gain Changer off my board, it somehow always comes back to knock of the "flavour d'jour". The only problem I have with the GC is that it does lots of things well, so I never know how to set it and am always tinkering...

I just recently got a gain changer. Its a really good pedal. It has a nice warmth to it. I am more into fuzz and boost pedals. But now that I have the gain changer I finally found a excellent overdrive to stack with my fuzz and boost pedal. Its real rich sounding and harmonic. I don't know why I waited so long to try one out . All I can say is it was worth the wait.

I want to give a shout out to a pedal that you don't often hear about but it offers a lot... Boss Blues driver! Goes from mild amount of dirt / boost to a hell of a lot of gain on tap. Sounds really pleasing, fat and very bad arse. a nice alternative to TS. Also catalinbread Dirty Little Secret! Also ( because I've been getting into mini pedals to cut down the size of what I carry to a gig) .. Moore Morpher.. not expensive! I never return it past 9 o'clock... It has so much gain on tap and it sounds huge! It's a Shur Riot clone. Currently for overdrive on my mini pedalboard I have the more Green Mile Tube Screamer clone... Which I think sounds better than Tube Screamer and it's more versatile and has more gain ..and the Morpher... And my overdrive needs are totally covered! Lastly I Want To Praise the xotic EP booster! I didn't realize how useful this thing was when I first tried one but now I have one and the first thing is that it adds this very beautiful modulation or I don't know what it is but it's the Echoplex preamp that does it. So it makes the tone sound somehow a little fatter and somehow a little prettier. And number two, you can use it to just give yourself a nice little clean boost or you can turn it up and give yourself a really nice very fat but still clean drive tone for leads or you can turn it up all the way and use it to kick the snot out of whatever its Downstream from it LOL. Super useful thing and I always have it on in some capacity.
