Hey, I played guitar a long time ago and decided to pick it up again 10 years later, but with good gear this time around. I have a Suhr classic pro and I just picked up a Maz 18 (stock speaker). I'm trying to dial in a good blues tone, but I am struggling. Do you have any tips on where to set... - pickups - guitar tone knobs - amp tone knobs - amp cut knob - amp reverb knob I can't find any really good videos of the sound I want, but here are some that come ... sort of... close I suppose. I want that "smoke filled, dark, soul-filled blues lounge" vintage feel. Sort of like the 2:00 minute mark of this video but with a tiny bit more distortion. Something about it just feels 'vintage' to me but I can't quite get it: Any general tips would be really appreciated too. I also have some pedals but it actually makes the sound a lot worse I think (I am playing at quite a bit lower volume, maybe too low... I live in an apartment and am scared to crank it). I have an Brake-Lite attenuator set to 2nd position. If it helps, my pedals are: TS808 tube screamer, MojoMojo, JHS modified Soul Food, Wampler velvet fuzz, Mesa Boogie flux drive. I'm still in the definite learning phase... so you might say I'm kind of tone deaf still. It makes asking questions like this hard because everyone just answers "its whatever sounds good" or "turn knobs until it sounds right" but if it were that easy I would have already done that

Hate to say it, but play with those knobs. Make big adjustments and listen. You will soon get a feel for the range of sounds you can achieve, and what to twiddle when you want something different.

You’re going to have a hard time driving the amp hard enough to get any breakup at apartment volumes. The mini z or cure would serve you better. With single coils I find a boost pedal like a xotic ep is helpful. Humbuckers can usually get there easier with the Maz. Volume at 2:00, eq bypass on, master over noon. Put the brakelite on 4. Use cut to control overall tone. Try raising the height of your pickups too.
