My cab came with Alnico Blues. I've lately been running a mixed pair of WGS units in there. I hadn't used the cab much recently (went down to 1x12 for gig portability) so I hadn't run it up to high levels with the new speakers and fresh tubes. These speakers are much heavier on the bass area than the Blues are (obviously, almost any guitar speaker has more bottom than alnico Blues have).
I did that this weekend, and I had an awful mechanical rattle. Sort of like the famous rattling Z logo, but this wasn't that. It's actually coming from the top of the cabinet-- if I sit on the top or push down on it, I can make it go away.
I tightened the handle screws, the speaker screws, and all the back cover screws-- I didn't find any loose.
Fortunately, it's only at higher-than-useful levels. No place I play can handle that volume.
But it's annoying and unsettling.
Anyone else have this problem? My cab is ca 2006 (bought with my Stang Ray).

Interesting timing. I just snagged a new 2x12 open back (oval back) that was delivered on Friday. I pulled out the two Celestions and popped in my ASW's without even playing the cab, but at practice volume, there was a rattle, too.
I went through and tightened all of the screws, but I haven't been able to pinpoint it just yet.

Just out of curiosity for me take the handle off without damaging anything-if you know how-and see of that makes the noise go away. If it doesn't then at least you know that wasn't it.
Another thing. Doc has mentioned that sometimes the grill cloth has been installed too taught and that will cause a high frequency rattling noise.

This is more of a low frequency buzz. And it's wood-on-wood. It's almost like the baffle has shrunk a little over time and now it doesn't quite meet the top of the cab anymore.
When I sit or stand on the top of the cab, the buzz goes away.

You might look inside to see if the baffle is mounted with screws and tighten those if neccessary. Those would probably be machine screws with a flat washer underneath.

OK Hohn, how old is this 2x12 extension cab? We did have a run of older 2x12's that did have an upper stick to secure the tolexed valance to the cab top inner edge. If you could snap a picture of the upper inside view of the top front of the cab , that may help diagnose your problem. So lets see if you have another FAMOUS problem. I love trying to help people and be insulted at the same time.

I found my issue. There's a metal cylinder washer (not sure if there's a technical term for it) in the speaker mount holes, it must have started to back out when I removed the stock speakers. When I installed the new speaker, the screw went as far as it would go, appeared tight, but was not. There was no torque on it, so it started to loosen under pressure from the speaker basket.
I took the speaker out (which pulled the cylinder washer out farther), tapped the cylinder washer back into its rightful place, reinstalled the speaker and no more rattle. I've owned many Z cabs and three times as many speakers, that's the first time I've had this happen.

Are you referring to the blind nuts inserted in the front of the baffle?

Are you referring to the blind nuts inserted in the front of the baffle? Yup, that's them! The tip 1/8" of the speaker mount screw was stripped off, too. Not sure what happened, but we're all good now.

I didn't mean it as an insult, if that counts for anything, but it was careless at best and rude at worst. I'm sorry. My cab is from 2006. Not sure if that means it's "older" or not. I'll see if I can post a pic.

I appreciate the apology and except it wholeheartedly. Sometimes this old man gets a bit grumpy, like " you kids get off my lawn " Can't help it some days, but I should know better.
Yes a picture would help diagnose the problem, there is a simple fix if its what I think.
