I normally don't enjoy buying things off Craigslist, but lately I've had a great stretch of luck. While on vacation, I picked up a nearly perfect condition Maz 18 Jr off the local beach's craigslist for a ridiculous price. Then I searched locally and finally found a matching cab - a Swanson 1x12 that is quite beefy loaded with an Eminence Red White and Blues. The two together were less than $900! I'd always wanted a Maz and so far I haven't been disappointed. I especially like it with my telecasters. Glad to be back in the Z fold after selling off my Ghia stupidly a few years ago.

You scored BIG TIME on what the Doc calls his "Swiss Army Knife" of amps. If you didn't much history on the amp from the seller you may want to invest in some new EL84's or 6N14N tubes (see link) to make sure it's functioning at it's peak! Congrats on a great score and a great amp. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/72831/6n14n-selected-tubes-available

Thanks for the advice Steve. The seller of the Maz also gave me a full set of replacement tubes, including two rectifiers. But not sure how much use they had before. I'm definitely going to dig in and do some homework and tube swapping to try to maximize the amp. It certainly sounds good in its current state regardless!

Nice score. I've never heard of that cabinet. It looks good. I had not heard of this cabinet maker either. But when I researched him he got very good reviews. Solid as a tank, quality construction, ported cabinet with semi-open back, thick as a brick. Very happy with it for the $. Not sure if he is still making them, but his website is below: swansoncabinets.com

I am new to this forum and seeking advice. I too want to purchase a Maz 18 Jr. I've seen one's with no reverb vs reverb. I've seen them with blue speakers vs Gold speakers, I've seen them in different colors, I've seen them with 2 twelve inch speakers vs one twelve inch speaker, some have brake lites installed, some with attenuation installed.
I want a new sound for my PRS S2 Custom 24 guitar, trying to get away from the Fender Twin Reverb.
The prices range from $1,200 to $1,800 on Craigslist. I need to get it right the first time. I want to keep this amp for at least 5 years.
I welcome your thoughts please, thanks in advance.

The Maz jr is a tad less aggressive but has on board reverb. I bought the Catlinbread Topanga for my Maz Jr. and had a good time with it. A lot of PRS players here that have one time or another owned a Maz Jr. If I were to by a Maz Jr. I would look for one loaded with a brake lite and a gold, blue, WGS ET65, etc,, they all sound good so its a preference thing. Some folks love the gold, it was too much for me, but I like it strong players amps on stage. It projects quite well. Your options of finding the perfect Maz Jr. amp at a ridiculously good price are quite favorable. If I knew now what I didn't know then..I would determine each component that you want, then look on Reverb and The Gear Page. I would post an ad that says you want to buy a Maz Jr on this forum, and I bet a number of folks have a Maz Jr that is mint condition that they might sell. Oh, you won't get it exactly right the first time, and that will lead you to at least two other amps in the next five years. So budget for it now.

I realize I asked a broad question, but you did a great response, it does help. Here is what I hope to be getting soon, Dr. Z Maz jr 18 reverb 1x12 combo amp. Red with matching red safe case. Also includes a Z break attenuator. 2014 model, $1,500, which I thought was fair.

Just a question for you - have you listened to any videos online? You should be aware that the reverb on most of Doc's amps is a very subtle reverb - you can't go "surfing" with it. It's great sounding but not everyone's cup of tea if you prefer a very wet, deep reverb (if so, you should be looking at EZG 50 or Z-Lux). You can't really go wrong with any of the Zs though.

I have a Maz 18 NR with the base Celestion 12" speaker and a Brake Lite. I also own a 1-12" Z-Lux , a Princeton and a Super Reverb Reissue. Have also owned an EZG-50, Deluxe Reverb, Vibrolux Reisue ,and Twins. In my opinion the Maz takes pedals better than any of the aforementioned , especially the Fenders. I have used my Maz on my last 4 gigs and seem to have found the sweet spot. I play Teles and have found that running them through the lower input jack produces the best tone for me. I usually run the Brake Lite at one or two clicks and run my controls near noon except the cut and master which vary according to the venue size. I use compression, delay, overdrives, clean boosters and a volume pedal without the effects loop. The Maz wants to be cranked up. At bedroom levels it lacks bass and is uninspiring, but cranked up it is my favorite amp. I can't believe it is only 18 watts and it has never failed to cut through the mix with guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums. I think you will like it!
