I'll preface this with another shout out to the crew at NextGen music - the shipping is silly fast and they're always a pleasure to deal with.
I received my new speaker for my Maz18NR today. I haven't attacked it like mad since I want to let it break in some, but the early findings are very impressive. I was in touch with the folks at Eminence, as well as Josh himself, to see if they thought this would be a good complement to a Maz. Josh Smith runs his in his Morgan PR12 (Princeton) and the tone is amazing...but that can be misleading since he is a monstrous player...then again...would he play something that didn't sound great? ;-) In its design, he was going for the clarity of the Wizard, with the bass of the Tone Spotter and the highs and break-up of the Red Fang. I've only played the Wizard and the Fang, and both a long time ago, so it's all off memory. I loved the Fang, but didn't like it as much as the Gold in the Maz. I did't like the Wizard at all, but I admittedly bailed on it before it was broken in. This speaker seems to have the warmth and roundness of the Gold, but with a tighter bass response, and a much more pleasant mid range than the Wizard had to my ears. The highs are excellent - not ice-pick, but plenty there, and it interacts very well with the eq stack of the Maz. Haven't run it in cut yet. It's brand new, and at the moderate levels I've been playing it at for the last 3 hours, I think I prefer it overall to the Gold, which is saying something. It's excellent for a big round clean with a touch of grit - right around where I like to keep the amp so I can use my guitar volume.
I'll update as the break-in proceeds to see if the honeymoon is still on ;-).
