I’ve owned a few Dr. Z amps, including a Maz 18, Maz 18 NR, Maz 38, Prescription ES, Sting Ray, Carmen Ghia and 6540. I’ve strayed away for a few years, gigging with some other amps (Bruno, Bad Cat, Clark, Vintage Sound and a ’66 Showman), but have always missed having a Dr. Z in the stable. I haven’t been able to hear one in person, but after checking out all of the YouTube demos and reading countless reviews and forum posts, I pulled the trigger today and bought a Z-Lux.
Out of the dozens & dozens of opinions on the web about this amp, I’ve only seen 2 strong negative remarks, both of which complained that the amp is too bright. I would think if this were true, that a lot of others would have complained about the brightness, as well. Anyway, that’s what a treble knob is for, right?
So I’m back in the Dr. Z fold after a few years and looking forward to reading and sharing opinions again on this forum! The hard part is waiting for the UPS man. Ugh……

Just got mine! It is bright, with all knobs at noon. Like you said, use the tone knobs. 40 watt, 40 lbs, verb, trem, boost, cathode bias, 4 x6v6 is kind of esoteric and cool....theres a lot to like about this amp. I tried it for a few minutes at the shop. Im working on an MBA so wont have a lot of quality time with it right now but Im itching to crank it with a band.

I guess it must be a bit bright because with a Les Paul on the middle switch position I still have the bass knob around 3:00, but it's never been an issue, even for my strat. Great sounding amp., alone or in a band setting.

It's not too bright which was my first impression too. I have to say that my Z-Lux just simply has a lot of TONE. Whether it's Bass, Middle, or Treble, I've got more of all of it than I need. I found that for me, the key is balance. The tone controls are so effective that I find new tones every time I move her to a new stage or room. It's just a fantastic amp, I love it.

Great amp. So nice I bought it twice! I keep the T rolled off just a tad, at about 11:00. Mids at 2:00, B to suit the room--usually around noon.

I think it's a bright amp. I also think it's the best amp I've ever owned!!! So, I have to turn one knob to the left a little bit.

I keep mine at 11:00 And depending on the room set my bass a little higher. Once the amp get warm and those tubes get to cooking it's on!

I have the combo I just assumed the open back and speaker had something to do with this "brightness." When you turn it up loud it really cuts, almost like the power section boosts treble a bit but its a lot more complicated than that. Ive had other good amps that reacted like this I just turn the bass up with the master. Its particularly great for Gibson middle position sounds where you have the volume and tone tweaked.
Im that guy that would consider this a positive and I think many others do too. Theres not much negativity about the Z Lux that I would say is actually applicable.
Maybe those two people had Tele's without a tone cap on the bridge?

Shame there is not a switch to go from 40lbs to 20lbs . . . 8^)
