Doc,
I am sure this question has been asked many times. I see that you use an ECC-83 as the preamp tube and a RUBY 12AX7 as the Phase Inverter in the Therapy Head. Why?

Interesting. When I got mine, it was the other way around. Not a fan of the Ruby, I must say.

Mine was same as this V1 JJ ECC83 V2 Ruby 12ax7 ac5hg....great question. I wonder what to look for as a comparable replacement yet different.

ECC83 & 12AX7 are the same thing... just European vs. US names for them. Likely when Doc says "ECC83" he might mean the JJ brand specifically, because they typically call their products by those European codes. On the other hand, Chinese tubes (branded Ruby, etc.) often use the US designation. Is this what you guys are wondering about?

Completely changed the amp for me and made it 100x better, which as we know is extremely hard to do with an amp that's already pretty awesome.

I think I will give it a go as well after the new year. Also I have been wanting to try out the 6v6, EL34, and KT77's ....plus a nice NOS rectifier and some pre amps to play with.

Ruby doesn't make tubes, they just specify testing and possibly do some. I suspect they have them labeled at the factory (probably Shuguang.)
For currently produced tubes, I like the 12AX7LPS a lot (mentioned above,) though some can be a little noisy. I have found most of the newest generation of the Tung-Sol ones have sounded good for rock and roll. Actually, I've had some of the Chinese 12AX7s that have sounded good, but not great. The JJs I've had were good to darken an amp, but that isn't typically what I'm after. In an input tube, I want as much spectral information as possible, without harshness. In a PI, I want decent balance and honesty- I don't want it to sound like I put a blanket (or a megaphone) in front of the speakers.

I've done EL34's, couldn't really tell the difference between them and 6L6's, maybe a little less bass (or more pronounced mids overriding the bass). I'm interested in eventually plugging some 6V6's and KT77's in there.

OK this might seem like a really stupid question but, when I put this combo together I left the valve sticker in the head and sold it! Is V1 or V2 closest to the 6L6's? Thanks in advance for a little help...........

I think Walt has been running 6V6's for a while now...Doc said he liked the KT77's the most as a substitute

The EL34's did clip a little sooner than the 6L6's. 2 6V6 tubes should drop the wattage down to about 22-24 watts.

So if i'm following what you guys are saying, we could safely try some EL34 or 6V6 with the Therapy ? If so i'd be really happy as I got some to try and also love to tweak...

The Therapy will digest any of the standard octal base output tubes. I've run them all and had a fun afternoon trying it, and in the end I wound up with the stock tubes. The JJ's even sounded better than other makes of 6L6GC tubes I tried. Some blackplate RCA's might be great, but I don't have any and I'm not rich enough to buy some! Doc's got great ears. He picks his tubes carefully and it shows in the results!

My original point was to ask why he specified a ECC 83, which I know is the same as a 12AX7 and BTW JJ does make a 12AX7. The Phase Inverter uses the Ruby and it might have been used as it was tested for spec. I have just put a JAN 5751 in V1 and as others have stated it made a great difference in the amp. The breakup is later.
