I received my new Dr. Z Maz 18 in June,05. Tone was unbelievable. I began to notice when playing on top strings , the lower tones would be a roar. not clear notes. Chords are muddy. I can't seem to clean the sound up, no matter the volume and gain settings. The pedal board was put together by the super guys at Fat Sound, where I ordered the amp. We tested it there and no problem on their amp. It's like the amp has to much bass and I can't adjust it out. Any body else have this? Thanks.

hmmm... i have my bass cranked 3/4 of the way up and i don't get that problem. here's some questions for you: where are the master and volume levels set? you should be able to clean the amp up fairly nicely by cranking the master all the way up and using the regular volume for your room level. turning the master all the way up basically makes the Jr. behave like a non-master volume amp. also, are you sure the crunch your hearing in the chords is coming from the bass? the e.q. on the Maz Jr. is a lot different than run of the mill Fenderish stuff and i've found that some of the best settings and tones come from cutting some of the treble frequencies and the Cut knob as well. the e.q. just behaves differently that a lot of other amps, at least in my experience. other than that, you might want to try substituting a different preamp tube in the V1 position of your amp, which will have the most immediate impact on your tone. check out Myles website at: www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.comthere is a lot of useful info in there. and if worst comes to worst, take your amp, guitar, and pedal board down to Fat Sound, tell them what you think is going on, and let them figure it out. Stu is one of the best after-the-sale-service guys around. i bought my amp from him too and i'm sure he can get you straightened out. that's what i would do anyway, unless of course you've determined that it's a tube related/preference issue. what else, oh yeah, i see by your screen name, that you probably play a PRS which is a mighty fine instrument but at the same time, humbuckers are not going to give you that Tele sparkle. it doesn't make a Tele any better, it's just a different sound, but i'm sure you already know all that. wow this is a long post, but if you're convinced it is something in the amp then haul it up to Fat Sound but i highly doubt that is what's going on. i think it probably has more to do with getting used to the controls as although they are labeled in a fairly familiar manner, they are far more interactive than other non-Z amps. good luck and post a follow up when you get it straight!!! charlie

Anytime I run into what I think may be a problem with the amp, I unhook all the toys and adjust the amp to where it sounds good on it's own.
Is there any effects in your loop BTW?
I actually base my entire tone off the amps tone anyway, vs some guys will tweak the amp to make their pedals sound good, and IMHO that's a mistake.
Anyway, Now add one pedal at a time and play several minutes until you find what is causing the low end to load up on your amp.
Alot of pedals have emphasis on low end, and certainly combinations of pedal can be a recipe for sonic trouble.
I use the same amp as you, but I mod my own pedals to accommodate my amp, and that helps alot too.
Hope this helps,
