Seriously thinking of buying a Maz Jr. Now most of the time I just play at home and I do only few small gigs. Wil I get any decent sound out of the Jr at home without my wife complaining about the loud volume (assuming I play good:-).
I hear that many amps only sound good with volume at max so I'm wondering what about the Maz Jr?

Well, being a former Maz jr owner I'll chime in and say this: don't expect the maz to sound as good in the living rm as it does opened up at a gig...it aint gonna happen....
But, I used it in my living rm with an Airbrake choked to bedroom level and it was fine. It also has a master volume to help out. I found it sounded best with some of each dialed in; airbrake and master....
If you are ONLY gonna play the house and some small gigs...what about the mini Z?

Bob articulated that pretty well. While the Jr doesn't come to life at low volumes, for the type of music I play, I don't like it completely dimed either. I like my tone to be just "hairy" but still very spanky and chimey. I don't get that with both volumes dimed. I get that somewhere in the middle. Lately I've been running the master dimed and the pre-volume at about 9 oclock. That's my sweet spot. Now, at those settings, I usually play in my studio in the basement, and my wife (who is upstairs) complains that the walls are vibrating and she can't hear the TV. If you really want to get the amp into the "zone", I agree with Bob that it most certainly will be too loud if you have it in your living room. That's my .02 Shawn

If you live with someone almost anything is too loud in the living room. My Fender Champ 600 has a 6" speaker and it'll drown out the TV!

Guys, I know the amp is louder than the TV, my wife is already used to that:-)
I just know that some amps are totally useless if not cranked up to the max.

No, it doesn't have to be cranked to the max for the best sound.
However, it does need to be cracked open enough to push the power section a wee bit, which I must say is still really friekin' loud.
An 18 Watt amp into efficient speakers produces pretty significant SPL.

Like any tube amp, the louder it is, the better. The Z's take on different characteristics at different levels. If you like all the break up of the tubes and speakers, then get a Z-break if it's too loud.

Rolandt,
Probably too loud. My Maz Jr. is a custom with 2X12s, but even with the 2X10 set up, it is a very loud 18 watts---actually I think it's more like 24-26 watts. All tube amps are louder than you might expect because they "swell" with the input or velocity of the string. I use my amp in fairly large clubs without any miking and it carries fine---we are a 7 piece and it never gets lost in the mix. On really big gigs, we mike it.
I would recommend the mini. It's a great little screamer with tons of tone and you can overdrive the power amp without breaking out windows.
