I've been listening to some Youtube clips of the Z-Lux and am very impressed with the richness & harmonic complexity of that amp. Just beautiful cleans! However, it seems like (at least from the clips) that note attack is a bit soft. Is this the case and does it have the attack & aggression of A MAZ Jr. or Z-28? Also, Is it really punchy and tight, like most of the Doc's amp?
The reason I ask is that I had Bruno Cowtipper that was just beautiful sounding, but it was too polite with its soft attack. Great Jazz amp, but not so good for Rock.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Not many clips out there for the Z-Lux that show what else it can do besides the nice FAT cleans with a Strat. I've been digging those tones here myself, but on a whim, got the idea to plug the Les Paul in there and play to a backing track. I have the boost on for this clip, so the tone controls are not much contribution. Les Paul into Z-Lux

Steve, that clip is awesome.
The Z Lux sounds beautiful and must be heard in person to be truly appreciated. I would classify it as a bit pretty, though...

It may take a minute or so to load, it worked on my iPhone, tried it on laptop after reading about getting a blank page. I got the blank page but after about a minute it started playing

You can hear the same clip on my blog over here: Les Paul into Z-Lux
And yes, those tubes are from the Z-Lux.

Awesome tone. Thanks for reminding us that you don't need all that junk on the floor to rock. You just need to be able to turn up. Oh how I miss the old days.

Great sounds Steve! Between the Z-lux and the Therapy I personally see no need for another amp in this lifetime!

Well I didn't mean to steal the thread, but the OP hasn't come back to say if it helped or not.
My take: The Z-Lux has to be one of the best amps ever. I can get pristine cleans and a bit of raunch all without any pedalboard. It likes my Strat, my Tele, and my Les Paul, and even sounds great with my PRS. It is a little more polite in my basement, but has the power to hold its own on stage. It is light too! It is a keeper.

Great Les Paul tone there, Steve, it just sounds right, and from Z-Lux clips I've heard so far I didn't realise it would do that Thanks for posting it.

Well, that demo track pretty much removes any doubt for me on the Z-Lux having too soft of an attack to Rock. That thing definitely can snarl. I'm curious as to what brand two of those of pre-amp tubes are on the demo page, as the labels are hidden. From left to right they are Tung Sol, Sovtek, Sovtek, , Tung Sol, . What brand is the 4th one in (looks like a Tung Sol also). What brand is the 12AT7 on the far right?

Here's what Dr Z website lists as current for production.
Z-LUX V1: Mullard ECC83 (12AX7), V2: JJ ECC83, V3: NOS 12AT7, V4: 12AX7 LPS, V5: 12AX7WB, V6: Tung Sol 12AX7, V7-10: JJ 6V6
V1: First Stage, V2: Tone Stack Driver, V3: Reverb Driver, V4: Reverb Recovery, V5: Tremolo, V6: Phase Inverter
However, Dr Z does sometimes sub in different makes. I think it depends on the quality and reliability the shop assesses when testing batches of new arrivals.

I was very careful to keep them in order so I could get them back in the right holes.
