Hey
What's everyone's experience with getting good breakup at sensible volumes? I guess it cleans up well with guitar volume like all dr z amps.
The combo sound as big as a head and dr z 1x12 cab?
How much gain can you get out of it? What style or song can it replicate with either SG or 335?

I'm gonna jump in here, too, regarding the "breakup at sensible volume" thing. In response to that part of Dean's original post, what's everyone's feelings about needing a Brake Lite (or other attenuator) overall with their Z-Lux?

Here's my take: The master on the Z-Lux is very effective at keeping the overall volume down when needed. However, like the MAZ (series), but to a lesser degree than the MAZ, the master is not "tone neutral" because it controls drive to the power tubes. I guess I'd say its effect is somewhere between the MAZ master and a neutral master like the one on the Therapy. (I know some folks prefer the sound of the Therapy with the master up high, but I think it's pretty neutral tone-wise. However, higher amp output can push the speakers so their breakup comes into the sonic landscape.) As a result, I have not felt the need for a Brake Lite with the Z-Lux.
On the gain side, you've got to crank the volume knob pretty high to get preamp overdrive. Of course, that is also a function of your pickup output. Even at the max, you won't get a ton of gain, but you will have breakup. Best example I'm aware of is a batch of recently posted clips of Buddy Whittington playing at the Dallas Guitar Festival (or something like that name). BW has the Z-Lux volume "hard right" as he says, similar to the way he runs a MAZ. Buddy varies the amount of grit by pick attack and guitar volume.
I think with an SG or 335 and V up pretty high, you'd be quite happy with the sound even with Master down low.
Added: very flexible eq stack, so you can get lots of tones, plus you have the eq bypass available, which will give you plenty more gain.

So do you think the z lux is best for pedal Player? So you need the master up to get power tube od and volume up is pre amp?
