Looks like the noise issue with my Z-Lux combo has been resolved--thanks to Mike and Lee and all for the helpful advice--but I've just got one other question: mine came with a stock 16 ohm Z-12 speaker. Is that standard? Okay, two questions: if I wanted to run it with an extension cab that was 8 ohms (also a Z-12), I'd plug into the 4 ohm tap, right?

parallel resistance: product over sum: (16*8) / (16+8) = 5.333 *** (did the correct math - just forgot to update numbers in my post! Doh!!!)
I'd use 4ohms

Math can be cool, when it leads to more tone

The other consideration is that the power will be unequally split between the two loads. All else being equal (speaker efficiency etc), the 16 ohm speaker will only get half the power that the 8 ohm one will. So it'll be about 3 dB quieter than the 8 ohm will, if they both are equal in efficiency.

I wonder then why Dr Z wouldn't use an 8 ohm speaker in the amp instead of a 16, since the extension cabs are 8? Seems to me like matching ohms would make more sense...but what do I know? I just scored a red Z Lux off fleabay, and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival...already looking at getting the matching 1x12 cab. For sure matching ohms would be preferred.

I got an 8 ohm in mine, but I read a thread here once where another owner got a 16 ohm speaker in his. I think he was overseas.

The dealer might also have ordered it that way - hard to determine unless you ask dealer that question. Doc is usually pretty flexible and if a dealer wanted one he would have built it that way.

If you bought it new, I'd see if the DRZ or the dealer would swap it out with an 8ohm for you.

Mine arrived today, also has a 16 ohm speaker. I am hearing a slight rattle somewhere, especially noticeable with the tremolo on.

Mine came with two microphonic tubes--one was a NOS 12AT7; the other was a brand new JJ 6V6. The preamp tube made some pretty alarming noises--never heard anything quite like it. Tube amps! Whattayagonnado?

Mine came w/ a 16 ohm speaker also. I'm in the USA. It maybe an issue of the transformer responding better to the 16 ohm load???

The dealer might also have ordered it that way - hard to determine unless you ask dealer that question. Doc is usually pretty flexible and if a dealer wanted one he would have built it that way. I bought mine new. Think the good Doc will swap this 16ohm speaker? I assumed it was coming with an 8 ohm speaker which I prefer. My friend's has an 8 ohm. So far I've had tube rattle and a speaker I didn't want in my ZLux. I'm sending the tubes back in for a swap. I'd like to do the same for my speaker. Swapping the tubes I can see - there are bad tubes out there. A speaker swap? I wouldn't think so. You bought the amp with the speaker in it. It works - you're just not enamored with it. Can you picture the chaos that could occur if people were able to tell Doc to send them a new speaker because they didn't like it? How many hours did someone put on the speaker? How was it taken care of? I doubt that Doc could throw a used speaker into a new amp - I certainly wouldn't want to purchase it as new. Now you're talking about some real money that Doc could be losing. Doc does allow the dealer to make special orders - but it takes time. Realistically, I just don't think it's gonna happen. This is just my opinion for what it's worth. You may want to talk to the dealer you bought it from - they might be able to help you.

My Z-Lux is rattle free too. It's one of the quietest amps I've got.

Hi, I too got a 16 Ohms Z12 in my Z-Lux. When I asked about that, the good doc told me he tends loading Z-Lux with 16 Ohms speaker when a Brake Lite is installed from factory. This attenuator gives better results this way. I'm glad he does, cause I deeply need my Brake Lite almost all the time!
