Sweet! The volume knob is like the pre amp gain and the master is like the overall volume...I'm sure you know that but just in case.... Except when you add the Brake Lite to the mix: Then that becomes your overall volume and the master turns into a "poweramp saturation" knob that's *much* more fun than a mere volume knob. Especially when you blend pre- and poweramp breakup to your liking.

...yes...it does have the variable boost...and since it's on the pedal...it's much easier to get to then is the solo knob on my Mesa... The variable boost greatly expands the "usability" of the bypass as a solo boost. Sometimes, though, I just put the boost on, use Vol, Cut and Master to dial in and have at it! YMMV.

Well, I have a bit of a problem. During band practice, I've managed to dial in the perfect tone...which works for most of our setlist. But on the songs that need a nice throaty clean...I have to stop the show...and spend time away from the mike dialing in my Maz. Make no mistake...it's all there...but...
...I do miss my extra channel...I confess...
...I guess I could bring along a dedicated clean amp....A/B the amps.

Have you tried dialing the Maz clean and using a pedal for your dirt? The Z Drive is like adding a second channel for dirt.

yea...I might have to do that I guess. It's just that...when I set the master at noonish...and the volume around noon....my guitar just sings...oh, and the Brake Lite at the third position to control the decibels. I really hate to mess with that.
...ah the cost of tone...

Fwiw, I use pedals and the eq bypass, i.e., boost, function to get the variety of tones I need when gigging the Z-Lux. That amp's front end is quite similar to the MAZ. The uneffected setting is clean with both V and Master in the 10 to 12 (o'clock) range.

I set my amp at just the edge of break-up (volume and master at 10 o'clock on my 18NR with my pickups) and then push it over with a Klon or pull it back to squeaky clean with the volume knob. Does all I ever need.

This is also my only concern with the Maz. I like and want to use the OD from the amp and not a pedal. So, let me know how this works for you. I am seriously considering a Maz 18, but coming from a two channel amp, this was my concern. Have you tried backing off the guitar volume, will that give you the clean based on how you have your amp dialed in?

You might try to see if anyone lives near you that has a Maz 18 you can try out.

Great choice, and welcome in!
Best advice for tone seeking, listen with your eyes closed. You'll find some of the tones you like best will come form settings that look "wrong" on other amps.

Sounds like you need a Z-Drive. I've been messing w/ my settings lately but I have a similar approach as dergit. In addition to the Eq by-pass, you can switch between the hi & lo channels w/ a single button footswitch. Plug the guitar into lo, the switch into hi. (Or vice-versa)

OK...I took the advice of several of you...and here's what I came up with...
...with my LP Std...
...vol at about 1:30, treb at 11:30, Mid at 2:00, bass at 9:00, cut at 1:30, master at noon...
...the tone was perfect for 80% of our setlist...I followed advice, YES...it cleans up nicely with my guitar volume knobs...the clean tone isn't comparable with what I was used to, but with a little added delay for depth, it worked nicely.
...here's the thing...the tone I was getting with the guitar vol knobs cranked....for the majority of our songs...was simply worth any little compromise regarding my clean tone expectations...it was amazing...
...the eq bypass pedal...was set at about 50% for solos...
...this amp was just made for live band use...I just cannot get over how awesome I sounded...the tone I was hearing in our bedroom...was ok..but not inspiring...but the minute I heard my little Maz in our band...omg...
does this make any sense...my typing is all over the place...it's just me...sorry

...well this was band practice #4 with my new Maz! This time I used my ES335 and was very very...very pleased. This guitar's pups are a little softer sounding than on my LP...and the Maz just made it sound so pretty and woody without that annoying flubby sound I was so used to hearing. What a difference..and the guys think my tone is amazing. ...Tuesday....I'm taking my 56RI LP....and I cant wait to hear those P-90's sing...it's like saving the best for last. ..well..except, in our drummer's practice room...there's something going on there that makes our single coils buzz to high heaven. I'll bring the 335 too...just in case.

Playing Z amps now since 1998 (first a Maz38 w/reverb combo and now a carmen ghia) has opened up my playing so much. One by one, my pedals went into disuse as i became more and more comfortable just working the volume on my guitar. When i moved to the Ghia, i started to add back some gain and boost pedals because of the loss of the MV. Anyway, i'm a little late to the party but congrats on a great amp.

Congrats on the new amp! ... I have a Maz 18NR head and really love the amp. I've been using mine with a 335, a strat and a tele and it sounds great with all of them.
