First time poster ...I play mostly Gibsons....ES-335, LP, SG...I do have a nice 52 RI Tele as well....I use little if any reverb in my band, so the NR seems a natural. Maybe a little delay through the loop occasionally. Unlike 99% of everything else I'd heard on youtube, there isn't a single Maz Jr demo that sounded anything but awesome to me.
...so, here's looking forward to it's arrival way out here in Colorado...

Yer gonna love this one, Rusty. The Maz Jr amps are Doc's best selling amps for obvious reasons. Pretty much the Swiss Army Knife of the amp world. Welcome aboard, Brother! Sorry, "SISTER!" Great to have you!

Congrats! I've had mine less than a year. They sound fantastic right out of the gate but once you dial in your sweet spot it's just, well... sweet!

Welcome Rusty! A lot of great people and information here. I'm sure doctorice (Mike) will pop in with his list of Maz settings - worth the price of admission here alone!

Red with tan would be my second choice...I'm still stuck on the ZWreck grill cloth, which looks awesome with red, but red and tan is VERY nice indeed. Hmmmmm maybe with red the tan might be nicer now that I think about it... I'll have to go look now.

I've had my MAZ 18 Jr NR combo for a little over a year now & I'll tell ya...I appreciate it more overtime I gig. We played a 3.5 hour set last night & afterwards had an impromptu "jam" 'cause there was an unusual amount of seasoned musician's in the audience. There were a few guitarists basically standing in line to play through my MAZ. Lot's of positive comments regarding the tone this thing gives up! Especially after the tubes were cooking & the speaker loosened up. By the way, in case anyone is wondering, a Celestial Alnico 90W Cream just sounds incredible in this amp! It just reveals everything the MAZ can do.

...hi again all...thanks for the settings Mike...I can't wait to try them all...thank you so much
Larryz...I just got the standard (at least I think it's the standard one} G12-30...mostly because I haven't the vaguest idea which one to choose. lame, I know.

Mine is a blue, but just today ordered a standard g12h30 to try... We can compare notes! There's got to be good reason why it's the standard issue!

Many hours of fun to be had playing with the settings. A few "tips" that may be helpful: 1. Bass, mid and treble controls are passive. When fully turned up they're letting full signal through. Well, not quite, as there is still some loss: That's what the eq bypass does. (Some Zs have active eqs that boost frequencies.) 2. Volume is front end/preamp drive; Master is the power tubes. MAZ is at its best when (if?) you can get the Master up to noon (o'clock) and above. 3. Cut is sort of a tone control for the power tube section. As a result, a lot of what the tone sheet does is to illustrate how flexible Doc's design is. Enjoy! PS: Like your avatar. Source?

I think doc nailed it imho...for my intentions im very content...cream sounds interesting though...got the run down from humbuckers on basic expectations/speaker's...they concur.

Good score! Idont forget to check out the dynamics with just the volume on the guitar. Adds a whole other dimension to the amp.

YAYY....It came...and I've had a week to play with it...and here's my initial feeling...
WOW
ok...well....I played it raw ...right out of the box for a couple days...to get used to the tone knobs...and it's everything that I had expected. My significant other plays a Fender Vibro King and this amp lets me feel the individual notes even better than his does. Every note is equally felt and heard, and that's something i'd only really experienced with his VK.
Anyway...I'm used to using my Mesa's preamp to get that little bit of growl just before it really begins fizzing and for the first few days with my Maz Jr...I have to say...I wasn't overly impressed with the Maz's preamp tone...BUT...
...I finally got around to having the Brake Lite installed (it screws right into the back of the cabinet!! awesome)...and omg....it's everything I thought i'd want to hear...!!!
I rarely use a full out gain tone...but I tend to use....that clean ... just breaking up into a growl almost exclusively...and the Brake Lite....with the amps Master at around 1230.....simply made me want to sob with happiness.....lol
All my Gibsons sound equally good....especially my ES335.....and it doesnt' matter which pickup position....the amp loves it all...
sooooo.....I took it to band practice Saturday....and I was so happy ... not to have to be paying more attention to my tone...than to my singing....for a change... I'm the kind of singer who .... well, unless my guitar tone pleases me...I find myself not being able to express my singing the way I know I can. If that makes any sense.
I couldn't believe what a difference that Brake Lite made...In fact.....I kept the amp volume knob on only about 1000....and with the master at 1230 or 100....the tone was ... well, it was nothing i'd ever heard my fingers be able to do before...laughs..
As for the EQ knobs...they're generally kept somewhere around the middle...except the bass which, depending on how loud i'm playing, is only around 7 or 8 o'clock. I have to tweek a little bit if I switch to my SG from any of the others (I love the way my SG plays, but it's not nearly as toneful as my LP's or the 335 for sure)
I am so happy...thank you all for your advice...i'll keep coming in for more...lol
I am so happy

Sweet! The volume knob is like the pre amp gain and the master is like the overall volume...I'm sure you know that but just in case....also they usually say to adjust the B M T knobs by ear not by sight and I have found somewhat extreme settings that sound "normal" or in other words very usable. i love the note definition description, I think my first thought on my first Z was similar...that his amps stay more in the middle without any one sound overwhelming the senses.
Keep us posted on how your liking it.

...ohhh...and I forgot to mention....I find that I can use the EQ bypass footswitch just like I was using the 'solo' switch on my Mesa Lonestar Special ...
duh...
...and that was a feature that really kind of sealed it for me....when I decided to buy

Glad you're enjoying your MAZ. Do you have the variable-boost version of the footswitch?

|
|
Post by deluxx on Apr 12, 2016 14:29:05 GMT -7
...yes...it does have the variable boost...and since it's on the pedal...it's much easier to get to then is the solo knob on my Mesa...
