I've noticed an occasionally harshness in the high end of my amp lately. When I pick really hard on the plain strings in upper register, there's this "broken glass" kind of thing to the attack, and it's really harsh.
I have a GT EF86 here that I swapped in and it seemed to go away, but it wasn't completely gone that I could tell.
I'm wondering if it's time for a new output set. My amp was made in late spring 06, and this is the original set. I'm guessing it's about time?
Oddly enough, the original EF86 seemed to have a lot more highs than the GT... I'm not sure what the orig is because I can't get the heat shrink off-- I think it's Dario.
Any suggestions?

Put some power tubes in there! The change is so gradual you don't really notice until they really sound like poo, but stick some new ones in there and you're going to be all "Well THERE's my 'ray!"

Yep. I ordered a couple of quads from Eurotubes so that I'd have a backup. What a difference! And they weren't all that much to be honest.

I just popped in a new set of perfectly matched JJ's from amp-head.com and they sound like heaven. highly recommended and they hardness was pretty close to the original groove tubes, although they are a little softer and operate just hair below the GTs. I like them much better than any GT I've tried.
