I found a good deal on a Therapy from GC and it arrived today. I have had my Maz 18 for about year now wanted something with a different tone. I played it for about an hour and half. First used I my Fender American deluxe Strat with Lindy Fralin vintage hot pick-us. It sounded incredible. Cleans, slightly broken up, and mild overdrive were out of this world. But I wasn't crazy about it when heavy overdriven. I can get great blues and blues rock tone (thats what I bought it for) till the cows come. Next tried my Les Paul, had some trouble dialing in a great tone ,but got a good one. I didn't like it at all with my ES-339. I didn't spend a whole lot of time with the Les Paul and less then that with the ES-339 I hope in time I will learn to dial better tone with them. I ran it thru my 1 x 12 Dr Z cab opened backed with a Greenback. I have a Vintage 30 and a Heritage 30 that I can put in there try. I plan on getting another 1 x 12 down the road. Well I have rambled on enough just wanted to share with people who "get it" Thanks all for listening.

David, I struggled a bit, too, with the Therapy... until I paired it with a 1 x Tone Tubby Ceramic 40/40 open back. I think the G12H-30 would be the closest comparable, but that T.T. sounded nice & fat & muscular with the Therapy (and loud, too). Good luck in your search for tone!

The Greenback was my LEAST favorite speaker with the Therapy. The V30 is what Dr Z recommends. I love mine with a Canabis Rex, but if I swapped out again I would go back to the V30 which sounded great as well.
Congrats....give it time.

Last weekend, I ran my Therapy through my Monza cabinet with the Eminence V128 in it. I actually preferred that speaker with the Therapy over the Z12. Downside, it's 103db, so it will wake the dead...
The Z12 with a Maz kills, the Therapy, I'm lukewarm on right now. Thinking 10's might do the trick...

When I got mine I made the mistake of thinking that I could dial in a good sound pretty quickly - like on my Ghia Annie or Rati v2; WRONG!
There is an awful lot there, particularly if you aren't used to that 6L6 thing. FWIW, I grew up on a BF Vibrolux, later played a BF Showman and later a Boogie F50, and the Therapy still surprises me.
I read the same thing on here from what I would call the many-knob Z amp players (for example, the Maz 18/38), namely that you have to take some time and walk (not run) through the amp's capabilities - with one speaker - and once you get comfortable with some knowledge, increase the variables via speakers/cabinets, etc.
Just saying...take some time.

I like it quite a bit, took out the honk, has lower db, and less expensive!

I think it was an earlier version...maybe not as much a copy like they are making now in the V128, but it was their early competitor. I loved my WGS Retro 30 but the speaker developed a problem and that's how I wound up at the Canabis Rex. Really I should of just kept the V30 that came in my Z cab but I thought I could outsmart the Godfather.

Then I read somewhere else the Governor was their take on a V30...

And another take on the Therapy:
Liking it with my Les Paul a whole lot, initially used a C-Gold, now running it thru a newer EVM 12L. Southmusic70 hit the nail on the head ... spend some time & experiment with settings, speakers, guitars and pedals.

Funny to hear you say that because my CS-336 is my favorite guitar with this amp. They sound great together. Bass around 10 o'clock, treble around 12 or 1 o'clock, mids cranked up around 2 or 3 o'clock, master around 3 o'clock, volume where you like it.

I played a relatively quiet job last week with CS336/Xotic RC/Mesa1x12 open back cabinet, and I feel like I got good results. Still, I need to try it (and with some different guitars) with my 2x12 cab w/vin30s and a full effects board (compressor/OD/Dist/Chorus/phase/delay/boost) and see what happens; to be honest, I have high expectations.
It's hard to sound bad with this amp if you exercise what I would consider to be reasonable care in its use and with the components you use with it.
It's that good, like all of the Z amps.

Lately, I've gone back to the Tele but I have used my 336&335 most of the time with great results. Really been wanting to add a P90 guitar, someday.......

Hi I just finished another couple hours with the Therapy. I was having so much fun I only used my Strat. I am amazed at all of the tones you can get with just small adjustments. I have found a great heavy OD tone using my trusty Barber Gain Changer Pedal. I have been looking for a Tweed sounding amp now for about 6 months. I tried out the Fender EC Tremolux sounded really good, but thought it was very limited with no MV and only 1 tone knob. A buddy of mine had a coworker looking to sell a Rivera Venus 3. It has both a Tweed like setting and a Blackface like setting. He had my buddy bring over for me to try out for couple of weeks. I liked it and was about to pull the trigger, when a used Therapy popped up at GC. Seeing how you get 45 days now to "audition" gear risk free I decided to try it. I don't want to offend any with that amp as Rivera makes a great product, but the Therapy crushed it for tone. No contest. I will be taking the Rivera over to my Buddies tomorrow so that he can give it back to his coworker. I want thank all that took the time to respond and give their thoughts and tips.

David,
My advice is to keep on experimenting.
That's what I'm doing.

Love my Therapy with 2x10 Z's, open back. Sounds great with a Thiele EVM-12L too. The Z-12 speaker in 1x12 open back is very nice too, as is the V30. Thinking about trying a 10" Gold paired with one of the Z-10's...that might really be sweet.

I have found that sometimes more bass isn't actually more bass but almost has a smoothing out effect...you can turn the treble totally off and use the middle to create a different kind of high end tone....mids and treble up higher with bass really low for lots of shimmer....I've run just mids with more volume to get some sweet sounds.
I learned here the idea of 'adjust with your ears not your eyes' ,and it has been really valuable, as Dr Z seems to make musical noise creating machines.

FWIW I went from a Rivera to a Z as well. Rivera makes great amps, but wasn't the tone I was looking for. The Therapy is perfection!

My Therapy world transformed when I put a Governor in my 1x12 - never, ever liked any Celestion speaker (I have never been able to afford a Gold......) and the best of the Celestions was the V30.........but I prefer the Governor.

Well I have rambled on enough just wanted to share with people who "get it" Thanks all for listening. As owner of serial number 002, PLEASE take your time...........this is one mightily versatile amp, and like all great relationships, it takes time to develop. Close your eyes the next time to play your 339, seriously, close your eyes, and using your ears only, start turning dials on the amp. Do not look at them until you find THAT tone, and once there's a smile on your face, THEN look at your settings - you may be VERY surprised!! My son plays a 339 (and is a pro player), and he LOVES it through the Therapy!! He's saving his pennies as we speak. He's an old school tone kid, and now is getting into jazz, all through my Therapy...................clean, deep, rich, warm, a bit of grit when he pushes it if he wants. Beautiful! Me? I blow the rock socks off the roof with my ripping Les Paul Special with Lollar P90s, and then get extreme Straty tones from SRV to John Mayer........all without pedals! This is one amp worth taking the time to build a long term relationship with IMHO

I will add my support for the Therapy here as well. I just got my set up this year and it has a Creamback speaker in a DZ 1-12 open back cab. I am using a Strat and ES335 with this amp. I was at a point I started looking at some of the setups being used by Dave on the Therapy videos and discovered you need to put most of the tone controls at noon, adjusting the bass up or down depending on if I am using the Strat or the ES. I have the MV set at about 1:00 and the volume at 11:00 if I want clean and clean loud I just jack up the MV. If I want this amp to go into breakup I just push the volume up and damn! My speaker and head are just sounding broken in and I am really very pleased with the sound I am generating. Like I was told "don't look at the front of your amp, look away and play adjusting controls for what you like", did that and again damn! IMHO
