You guys talked me into a Z-lux, but I thought I'd wait until after the first gig to report back.
I play in a 80s-today cover band and need to replicate a lot of different sounds. We play mostly small bars and clubs. Sometimes mic'd, sometimes not. I was used to using an EL84-based amp for years, but in the last year or so switched to a Fender DRRI to replicate Fender cleans. I am getting most of my dirt (OD, grind, leads, up to fuzz) from pedals. The DRRI has been pretty unreliable AND it occasionally gets lost in the mix in some of the bass-heavy clubs we play. I have never owned a Z, but have lusted from afar. Anyhow, the Z-lux caught my attention and I thought I'd give it a try. Sold some stuff and...
This thing was a hit from the start. In fact, never got to even rehearse with the band with it. Just took it to the gig and crossed my fingers. First song was pretty clean (Pretenders)... this thing just sang. Later, though as we got heavier and dancier, is where the magic happened. Normally, in this club, things can get muddy. But with a combo of the ample amounts of treble and bass, the MIDRANGE control was the special sauce! I just goosed that a bit with my dirt pedals and solos came alive! This thing is fantastic. PLENTY of volume for a full band (I was in 40-watt mode, master at half, volume at 10 o'clock) in clean mode... and then I used boosts and dirt pedals for OD to taste. This thing takes pedals as well as anything I have played (with no loop). It's very reactive to my volume control (I play a 335 mostly). The master volume is also very cool. As the room filled, we naturally got louder (we always do!) and I turned the master up by 1 or 2 and... boom... same tone, just louder!
Altogether a great night. Couldn't be happier. Played everything from Pretenders (clean with chorus) to Black Keys (Green Muff fuzz) to some pretty heavy (classic) distortion. I played a POG through it... I played some delays.... all sounded fantastic. Clear and smooth. And pretty easy on the back...
Looking forward to next week!!!!!
PS. DRRI went on craig's list today.
