Uh oh, look who's been lurking anon' in the Ray section! ;D
My interest in the Ray is probably a little different to most ray users. I never see it written but I have the feeling the Ray would be a gorgeous clean for Brit Pop style music and singer/songwriter vibe. I really want a nice clean tone in my quiver but also something I can cover gig with to take some load off the 66. I'm down to three amps, GT, Ray, or RXES. I probably will have to get a GT regardless sometime of other but just depends on what I feel I need most, first. Most of the places I play with the 66 I run it clean with boosts so one question is, does it respond well to boosts and will I get a reasonable classic rock crunch, bearing in mind that I really like my pedal set up. I usually play alot of rock in my cover gigs, but again, the dirt comes from my pedals on most occasions. Also I think the Ray would be a superb choice for my original stuff alongside the Route 66, probably A/B 'd and it would probably work very well for our Police cover band. I'm thinking the wattage is about perfect as the Route 66 is about perfect for me. Another question, I at this stage only have closed back cabs, and I admit to not being a great fan of open-back cabs although that might change if I heard a gold. Is the Ray still nice through the Z-best or a closed back 1-12?. I should add, I'm not looking to rock out on the Ray, just want a sweet clean amp that can maybe fill a cover gig once in a while. Thanks Rayers!

IMO, the Ray is the SWEETEST clean amp out there.... It really is an AC30 with more low end and less "stiff" to my ears. Crank it up around 4 (depending on pickups), and you get a great pushed tone. I push the front end of mine with a Seymour Duncan Pickup booster sometimes and it really pushes it in to classic rock tones that way, and as with most Z's it takes pedals super well. I've got a clip of me pushing the front end with my SD pickup booster at www.guitartest.moonfruit.com on the Stangray page. It's the song called "Stang Bluz" .... Tele > Pup booster > Ray and that's it for that song. You can't go wrong with a Ray.

I've been using my RC booster the same way - with a mild clean boost, the Ray just breathes fire. Taz, I like all three of the amps you've listed. They are all very different from each other too. I can find ways to use all three. But if I had to have only one, it would be the Stingray. Fortunately, at this time in my life, I get to have all three, and that's a very good thing.

Jaye, Recently snagged a Ray and a Z Best.....made for each other IMO, I like that combo better than Ray > Gold. Not obsudly loud even dimed, with a Strat in #4 notch.............. Big grins. Have not busted out the pedal board with it yet, do have a Jeaurnig Luxury Drive lating around and it seems to work quite well with the Stangray. I'm with Steve, all 3 are great...but the 'Ray....well.....it's just 'Pretty" sounding.

Uh oh, look who's been lurking anon' in the Ray section! ;D UH OH... There goes the neighborhood!! RX ES JAYE!! I'm telling you... But if you don't heed my advise and go with a Ray... I have heard people talk about the C-blues with an open back and that they were made for it, and they really are and do sound wonderful... but I have also said from my First posts regarding the Ray that it works very well with a Z-best. I'm glad Curt heard that about the Ray with the Z-best too... I loaded 2 Alnico bluedogs in my Z-best and have loved those with it and the only thing that rivals that set-up is the Stock speakers. The Ray into the Z-best with the Bluedogs is very nice. So to me it works fine with a closed back... or an open back. If you just " want a sweet clean amp that can maybe fill a cover gig once in a while" the ray can do that. and it can rock out especially with a pedal and the Z-best. You really can't go wrong with any of them, but for what your're saying you're wanting... either the Ray or RX ES would be pretty close. ;D

Uh oh, look who's been lurking anon' in the Ray section! ;D UH OH... There goes the neighborhood!! RX ES JAYE!! I'm telling you... Well the RXES is probably just in the lead at the moment. I sure like that Overdose switch. But I'd love to hear those complex cleans the Ray produces and I've heard enough to be convinced that the amp is something special. I'm kinda thinking for me it will do "it's" thing as well as the Route 66 does "it's" thing. If that makes sense. There is another clean amp in contention also which is a little different again, class A 6L6 with verb and true grid tremelo in parrallel. I know I wouldn't be disappointed with any of the choices, it's just the one you DONT get that starts haunting you! ;D
