Hey Dr Z sters. I'm a recent addition to the forum. I've just ordered a Stangray head and 1 /12 cab from Apple Row music here in Portland Oregon. Haven't had the pleasure of owing a Z but love the sound of the pro's who do. All my amps have had reverb in the past and I was wondering if that has been an issue with any Ray owners? Is there a reverb pedal that goes well with the Ray? Any comments would be appreciated, thanks for having me aboard. Mike

Welcome, Mike! I ocassionally use a delay, but no reverb. If I ever get a decent delay I'll use it all the time.

Many of us who have the 'ray have discovered that we like it just fine without any reverb. It really has one of the best sounds out there, so in my case, I don't want to muck it up. You'll see.... By the way, welcome to the group, and you get Karma for a great amp!

Welcome to the group! You're going to love the Ray. If you get the chance to play it through a 2X12 with Blues, that's the speakers the amp was tweaked for. It's the best sounding cab for the 'Ray, IMO.
Congrats!

Thanks guys for the warm welcome. I appreciate all the good advice, and I will play it without reverb for a good time to hear it for its true tone. I'm just a little nervous for I've had that reverb crutch for many moons...Mike

By far my favorite reverb pedal is the T-Rex room mate. It works very well in front of all my Z's but especially well through the EF-86 input amps (Stangray, Route 66, Z28, KT45, Delta 88). I heard one last year at Z-fest and immediately bought one; it's never been "off" since.

I tried it in the loop but like it in front better. Just sounded better to my ears. I do the same thing with my Fulltone TTE.

I too was a big "gotta have 'verb" player. Also had to have delay, chorus, etc. I found that with the Ray I can actually do a great sounding gig (classic rock and a bit of country) with just my guitar, a good cable, and my Ray. The great sound of the Ray made me realize that the volume and tone contols on my guitar aren't there just for decoration. Welcome to the World of Tone!

Lots of praise for the blues & golds (Cele & Weber). Just wanted to add I've been using a Celestion G12H-30 in a Z 1x12 cabinet with a Ray for a couple months and recommend this speaker as well.

Looks like some SOUND advice from a group of knowledgeable players. Thanks Big Kahuna, I have a Replica by T Rex that I love and have heard that the Roomate is a great pedal also, now I know that the match up is great I might have to pull the trigger on the Roomate. Now the wait is on. I'm getting very antsy and its only been a week,ha ha

I don't miss 'verb on my Stang Ray at all.
But I'm not used to having it either. I prefer a dry sound.

I recently sold the EH Holy Grail and picked up the T-rex room mate. Killer pedal. I leave it on all the time. I've played the last year or so Guitar, cord, Z, but......
Lately I'm back to the big pedal-board and I have a Stang arriving on Monday. Sounds like this amp may take me back to the minimalist approach I had in '07.
On the other hand, I'm really digging Tele>Keeley Comp>BB>RC>Fulltone '69>Roommate>Maz 38. I find that the Keeley Comp, BB and Roommate are never off on the board. The Maz really likes those pedals.

I'm really doing my best to hang on and not think about it but you guys are making it real hard. The amp is really keepin its mojo and its been out for awhile so that gives me some good feelings about it staying in the rotation...Mike

I'm using the Maz 38 Senior right now and have a Stangray on order. I probably still have a good month and half wait yet. I too, worried a little about no reverb. I find in the past month using the Maz 38 I really have the reverb on so little that I don't think I'd miss it. On other amps I've always had reverb, such as the Fender Twin. I used to run the reverb about 4 or 5. Its surprising on the Maz how low I run it (almost off) and don't miss it. I don't think I'm gonna miss it on the Ray at all.

Trust me, you won't miss the reverb at all.......I came from a long line of reverb amps (Deluxe, Twin, Tremoverb, Rectoverb, ect...). The rich tone makes up for any loss of verb.
I really thought I needed verb too with my first Z amp, so I got a powerful multi FX processor and spent hours setting it up..... after the first gig I was so impressed with my tone I was glad I had the FX processor, I then realized I had it on bypass all night. That was the last time I ever used that FX processor (or verb) live. I can always add it later in a recording if needed, but I usually don't need to.

Had a chance to fire her up and man this is a very cool amp. Has a ton of bottem end even w/ the 1-12 it sounds big. Haven't had a chance to gig it yet but it was holding its own next to the 10/20 Divided by 13, in my basement. Nice round tone. Still wondering if I'll miss the reverb on a gig but time will tell. I've been backing way off on the reverb w/ my other amps and I'm liking my tone without it. I do use a slight slap back w/ a T-Rex Replica for a bit of a fatter tone and that sounds great on the Ray. Thanks for all the input from the Z page, you guys are great...Mike

Let us know how you like it once you've had a chance to really put it through the paces.
By the way, what speaker is in your 1x12?

Hi guys. I realize i'm chiming in a little late on this one but I had the same worries when I decided to go with the Stang Ray. Once I started playing it though I forgot all about the reverb not being there. The tone is so pure that I hate to clutter it up with anything. I'm using a Boss DD-20 Delay and use it sparingly. I've never received so many compliments on an amp like I do the Stang Ray.

Z amps in stock. And yes they even have a couple of Rays. Check them out at www.midtownmusic.com and call them to check inventory.
