Hi, Im new here, wanted to say hello. I just purchased a Stang Ray, that lands on Thursday. I was curious as to how much classic rock crunch it has and at what volume, or if it stays clean all the way up the dial. Thank you very much to who ever can help me out

Welcome!! The ray stays real clean up to about 3 1/2 and about 4 it starts getting some noticable "hair" on it. I usuallly don't push the volume up much past that, but I did once for a recording and I pushed the front end as well with a clean boost.... and it gets some pretty decent classic rock/crunchy blues tones. www.guitartest.moonfruit.com is my site and the blues song is the one that was pushed. GREAT amp, congrats man!!

Thank you very much to who ever can help me out hey, i ve only had my ray for a couple of months but i think ive found a nice setup for both singles and humbuckers. the volumes at 9 o'clock, tone 12 o'clock cut 3 o'clock. its loud and clean till you dig into the strings. this amp is so touch sensitive its sickening, and theres plenty more dirt to be had if you play around. and if you dig positions 2+4 on a strat this is one happening amp. you'll see. be well, PP

Hey pistolpete. Thank you for the advice. I use 57 reissue stratocaster, usually on the 4 position. Now I am even more excited.

The 'ray is just fabulous. I've been playing a classic rock band for years, and nothing is as cool as this amp in that band. You might want an attenuator though - it's seriously loud by noon on the dial. I usually run my volume at about 1 o'clock and it is fairly crunchy for this amp - still clean if I play softly, but then WHAM, I can get all kinds of hair just playing harder. But I have to use my Airbrake at one to three clicks down from the top or they want me to walk the plank. I'm a great big fan of telejas' clips too. He's got some great ones there. I have a few up on my gear page at www.gear.strayca.com/stingray.htm with various speakers, guitars, and effects. Check it out.

HEY TELEJAS...
On your soundclips site, the Stangray Brad licks clip, you have any idea where the volume on the Ray was? I keep hearing here that the "Ray has little to no overdrive", but you NAILED the Paisley "hair on the note" thing with that clip... how high up was the volume?

I had the volume around 4 (not 4:00), the tone around 2:00-2:30 and the cut around 1:00 (wish I had it a bit higher). I really like Brads tone and I think I've finally gotten as close as I'll ever get without having a $50,000 rig and a major studio mixing my tone, now if I just practice for then next 50 years straight I may be able to play like him

I've been a satisfied 'Ray user for two years now, and just last night wired a pair of Tonkerlites into a THD cabinet. I'm here to tell that rig (with the BB pre on) will ROCK! BB off you'll get some of the best cleans for country you've heard, step on your OD pedal for rock and go for it. Let us know how you like it.

Volume around 4? I'm in serious trouble. I've got RxJR #8, I run the volume around 4...serious trouble. See, I run the MV wide open & use an attenuator as my MV. So I would do the same with the 'Ray. But I've been looking for a bit more girth out of the RxJR than I think she can provide... a warmth, if you will. I do love my RxJR, but now I'm thinking since I'm not really using her for OD (I have other amps for that), the 'Ray may better suit me for "clean with hair on it"... or dear... big trouble ahead...

I use an attenuator at 99% of my shows to be able to run the Ray that hot. Same with my Mazerati, you need it on about 11:30 to get the "hair", so it's always attenuated too. I need a 2nd attenuator so I can run both together at full potential.

WOW. I have found my sound. I put my strat in the 2 position, with the neck pick up tone on about 9, and the middle on 5, And I can't stop smiling. I got a clean with peach fuzz, But hair is definately possible at a higher volumes. I plugged into the low gain, This thing is amazing. . I definately need an attenuator. lol. I love this thing.

GREAT amp, congrats man!! Good points. The breakup point will vary hugely with pickup output, jack you use, and any boost pedals in the mix. If I slam the front end hard with clean boost and my Duncan P-90s, I can get it to break up pretty strongly at about 10:00. If I go straight in with cooler pickups like my Kinmans, it's pretty clean all the way to high noon on the volume. I love this amp! Justin
