Just played a new Stangray at a dealer
Noted the cab was 4 ohms Dealer said they were the new 25 watt Celestion Blues Does this sound right
Celestion.com has no mention
and I forgot to look, can someone tell me what output settings the Stangray has.... is it 4, 8 and 16 ohms
thanks, and the amp sounded killer

AFAIK (unless it's a recent release) there is no Celestion 25w Blue, only a 15w and 50w Gold. The Greenback is 25w. Weber makes a 15w, 30w, and 50w blue. And yes the Ray has 4, 8 and 16 ohm taps.

You know what... That's the 2nd time I've herd someone refer to the celestion blues as 25wt speakers!?!? I was reading the Brad Paisley interview in GP magazine, and he kept referring to his "25wt Celestion Blues and 50wt Gold".

ya, I was surprised too but he seemed positive, said they were new
is Celestion making them ? is the Doctor modifying them ?
Enquiring minds want to know
was also surprised at the number of 4 ohm cabs I have seen is that what the Stangray is best dialed in for ?

If all that's available are 8 ohm Blues, you have to wire them to 16 ohms or 4 ohms. Doc says they are sturdier at 4 ohms.

IIRC it is due to XFMR safety more than sturdy, when wired to 4 ohm if one coil goes 'open' your amp will still see an 8 ohm load, when 2x8ohm are wired for 16 ohm and one goes south you have an 'open' circuit, XFMR see's no load ...but you may see a puff of smoke.
Never heard of 25 watt blues either.

thanks for the replies
and tele62, I like your explanation if one goes south but I kinda thought you would use 2 16's in parallel for the same reason
And, I thought as you go down in output selection, you are using less winds on the Output transformer....Or is the Stangray 8 watt out ideal with 4 and 16 as a mismatch
or am I like semi clueless altogether

Doc has stated he had a pallet of 8 ohm blues, the first rays went out 16 ohm.after seeing that a cranked eat could toast a blue he swapped to the 4 ohm scheme for safety. If you dig\search the ray section you can find this in a post from Doc.

From Doc, 9-17-06, in the thread link above;
"When I started in January to release the StangRay I purchased 260 Celestion Blue speakers. That's right guys 260 of them, with shipping over $36,000 worth of them. This way I could offer a deal on the head cab combo, and lock my price up for the year. BTW I have less then 40 left, thank you guy's very much.
All the Blues I bought were 8 OHM, so the cabs were either 16 ohm ( two 8's in series ) or 4 OHM ( two 8's in parallel ).
I have found that 2 series connected 15 watt Blues can fail in the StangRay. So I have connected all 2X12's to 4 OHM, that's cab and combo both.
On some days I like the sound of two Blues in Series at 16 OHM ALA VOX, but they are just TOO expensive to put in harms way. All StangRay's will be wired for 4 OHM."

I was just going to post that, Curt. You be a fast draw, eh? Nah, Luck-O-the draw..........., That's just a tid bit I stored away, was an easy way for me to remember when I was in danger or not with speaker loads and ratings.........amps and speakers do sound best on the verge of nuclear melt down

If you dig\search the ray section you can find this in a post from Doc. Mine is 16 Ohms. 'Tis nothing to re-wire, though if I wanted to go four ohms. I'll never be able to crank this amp to the danger zone. It's ear-splitting just halfway up! Justin
