I recently got a deal on a 1x12 convertible extension cab that can be open, partially open or closed. I ditched the 16 ohm speaker it came with, installed a Vintage 30 that I had laying around in a box, and hooked it up to my Maz 18 studio combo with a PCNS parallel cable. The difference in sound is amazing. I love the stock G12H30 in the Maz for it’s clarity and punch, but adding the Vintage 30 with a closed or semi-closed back really smooths out the sound and adds some depth. I don’t like the Vintage 30 by itself (that’s why it was in a box), so I’m thinking I might like the extension cab even better with a different speaker. I’m wondering what speakers other people are using in extension cabs and whether you use closed or open backed cabinets. I’ve been considering either a Greenback or the Dr. Z Z-12 speaker. Anyone use either of these in parallel with the G12H30? Thanks!

Great reports on the Z-12 speaker with the Maz 18, also the Greenback M.

+1 on the Greenback, or possibly a Celestion Blue.

It's gonna be hard to beat the combination you've already discovered ( G12H30 with V30 ), But I'd try the Dr Z 12 first (and then the Celestion Gold) with the Maz.

Lately I've really been digging my Scumback J75 with my MAZ Jr--it's even pushed the Weber Blue Dog to the side.
Jim's "J" series Scumbacks are the standard British speaker cone, but with a magnet sized halfway between that of the Greenback and G12H-30. Kind of a "Goldilocks" British speaker, if you will; but I'll be darned if it doesn't do a great job at everything. Sound familiar--kinda like the MAZ itself?

I prefer weber silver bells with all my amps. Celestions to my ears always sounded thin, papery harsh and brittle. The silver bell adds a lots of depth and rounds out nicely to me.

i have used numerous cabs and 12's with my maz over the last 4 years and must say after ending up with 2 of the doc's 2-10 cabs…….for me nothing sound better than a maz with 10's…….YMMV

I have a combo with a G12H and paired it with a Celestion Blue in and extension cab. The two sound glorious together. Highly recommended!

Plus 1 on the G12H in the combo and the Vintage 30 in the extension cabinet.

Thanks for the recommendations. Sounds like I have a pretty solid combination already, but I'll probably something new just for fun. I hadn't really considered the scumback or weber speakers before, so I have some food for thought there. The beauty of speakers is that they're one of the easiest and most economical ways to change the sound of an amp and there are so many great options.
